I am into Metal Detecting also. I have been doing it for about five years and had my best find last friday. I have been checking into a site that is now a Ghost Town. A friend of mines father in law owns about 2000 acres of mostly farm ground but some wooded etc. Well after talking to some of the neighbors for permisson to hunt some of their land one older fellow was a big help. He showed me all the info he had on the area and told me were the Train Station Blacksmith Shop ad an old Hotel stood long ago. Also some houses and stuff. There is a church that I am trying to locate that dates to 1816. Well by the time they were done showing me around I had about an hour of daylight left so I decided to hunt awhile. My friend stayed about 20 minutes and decided it was too cold to watch me dig holes in the ground. After digging about 20 peices of trash and old junk my Whites MXT showed a nickle signal at 6 inches. After digging alittle over a foot out popped a 1851 Civil War era Union Belt Buckle in very good condition for being burried for so long. I about had a stroke and could not hunt no more. I just wanted to go home and clean it up. Its worth maybe 300 bucks but it will never be sold because I dug alot of holes before I found it and its worth more than that to me. The size of the buckle caused the depth on my machine to be off and while its nice to have the display on a machine the only sure way to know whats down there is to dig. Its a great hobby and if you have any intrest in history I think you would love it. Sorry for the long post.

I've been wanting to get a detector for many years, but there are so many of them out there that it's hard figure out which to get.

Nice going on the fine Mr Clean...hope you find more.

I have 4 machines. There is no perfect machine If not wanting to spend much until you see if you would use it much I would get a Tesoro compadre. Very simple machine that looks like a toy but they work very well. Very lite and I got one mainly for the wife to use. It also has a lifetime warenty. But if wanting something better I love my Whites MXT. Great machine that can be used for coins and jewlery, relic hunting, or looking for gold and does a great job at all three. Will pick up a coin sized object at 10 inches or so. The compadre more like 6 or 7 inches. Just learn the machine you get. Its alot of fun DXMan.

I enjoy the Hobby big time especially when i live so close to the Texas Gulf Coast. No telling what will wash up on the shore's. Texas is enriched in history and old artifacts, but you have to be careful of what you dig up! some people lay to rest there pet's with their metal collars tag's intact so be careful digging in a residential area.
just a reminder have fun ;)

I had one of these when I was a kid ,(Radio Shack model) I had more pop bottle caps then I could count (IM an ace at flicking those babies) but there's really no more of them around nowdays. I never really found anything of any value over my young years , but I thought it was pretty cool back then. Nowadays you go to the beach earlier in the morning after the 4th of July and you will see a dozen or so guys out there in the sand collecting up goodies , kind of looks like the aliens had landed. Yeap ! that would be my luck to find a dead skeleton of a dog with a 3.99 cent dog collar. Go figure.

I have an el cheapo Radio Shack detector that I used to have a bit of fun with.Never found anything worth much. I did use it on several occasions to find lost items however. When my father was cutting and hauling firewood he would occasionaly loose a choker chain in the snow somewhere while yarding with the tractor.I found them for him on at least 4 occasions and at about $125 + each (they were stainless steel) it made it worth it.To him at least. :?

Mr. Clean,
Got any good sites for prices on the Whites MXT?

Done a quick search and it seems like that one is close to the top of line.

Thanks

I notice the better the Metal detector is the deeper you have to dig. 2 Funny
Code:
now that is too funny marty

i also have heard..
some people who keep at it..
in the right places do indeed find some good stuff..

i just may pick one up
to use after july 4th myself..

any good links?

I like it better than the top of the line DFX. Its a deeper machine imho. The DFX has more options as far as setup and some like that. Tesoro Tejon is a great machine but it has no ID or depth info. Its a great relic machine. I also have a Minelab Sovereign and it is great in high iron areas or on the beach. Very good at finding Silver coins! There is no perfect machine out there for every kind of hunting but the MXT is the best all around machine there is. It is even good at finding gold in the desert. Kellyco has the best prices. A friend is putting a pic of my Buckle on the findmall forum today or tomorrow if you want to see it. It will be on the MXT forum at Findmall. Lots of cool pics on there and treasure depot site. Check out the Predator digging tools. They are great for digging! Somtimes the display on a machine will talk you out of digging something. I also have a Troy Shadow X2 and when that was all I had I dug more junk But think I found some things I would have talked myself out of digging if I had a display. Also get some good earphones. Killer Bees are what I use. One last thing. If you get a MXT get the 5.3 eclipse coil for it. It works better in trashy conditions and is as deep as the 9.5 inch that comes with the machine. It is really 6 inches. I use it 90 percent of the time. A friend of mine is ate up with detecting. He has tried all the best machines out there and I get to use them too. He has deep pockets and can use any kind of machine he wants . He used to use the DFX. Now he uses the MXT. I will shut up now.

I use a cheap one to locate water and electric lines before I plant trees and shrub's. If i am not mistaken metal detectors generate a radio frequency?

Yes they do. Higher freq generaly better for low conductive targets like gold. Lower better for higher conductive metals like silver.
