Need some advice on murs or cb

What im thinking about doing is installing cbs on both my atvs and in my truck. I already have 45watt motorola maxtrac radios in ammo cans on the bikes that operate on murs freq. I have a no ground plane antenex antenna. They work, but not perfect. We need them so we can keep track of my teenage nieces and nephews in case of an emergency while riding in the national forest in the ozarks. And its real hard to broadcast in the thick trees and mountians to our truck that is at the trail head. So im thinking about scrapping the current set up and going with cbs and maybe hook them up to a RM kl 203 amp. So i would have to buy 3 radio sets, two atvs and one at the truck. And money is tight right now, i dont really have it to just blow. If i can make my current set up work better i would much rather do that. I have already had a break down on my atv 4 miles from the truck. Lucky some one was with me. But we are worried about if that would happen to one of the kids, they dont stick together. And there is probably 70 miles worth of trails. I dont know a whole lot about radios, so any advice would be very much appreciated! Im going to post this in the cb section too so i can get the most amount of input on the matter. Im going to post this in the murs section too so i can get the most input possible. Thanks for your time

If your money is tight the kl203 will get the job done. As far as talking 70 miles that probably won't happen but a general rule is get as high up as possible. I live in the hills of WV so i know what its like.

Well, there are many trails, they use to be old logging trails. And they all kind of spur off of the main dirt road. Each trail is probably 5 to 10 miles long.

Haha, yup, pretty much. I go riding in the mark twain forest by cassville. We have some friends that live in nixa.

Walker i am sorry i don't know nothing about Murs. But i do know Rob and Tony and quite a few others here do know a lot about Murs. You and your family have a Happy New Years. ( I used to pick-up chickens over there at George's ) off of hwy 37. know right where Cassville is Hello Neighbor.

Im from the kc area, but we go riding down by the state park in cassville. We pass by georges on our way down. It smells wonderful through there. My inlaws live just out side of crane. So we are down in your "hood" quite a bit. Hope you guys have a great new years too!

In a couple years 11 meter will be completly useless for 2 way communication. The sun is starting to show signs of life.

How do you think that comment benfits me? Did it answer my question? No, it didnt. Im not looking to find out your conspiracy nut case point of views. Go put your aluminum foil hat back on....

Sun spot activity makes local CB use a challenge. Skip reduces local comumunication effectiveness due to the intensity of 'bounced' long distance signal engery dominating receive. If you have MURS capabilities, which are higher frequencies unaffected in large part by sun spot activity, that would be better for the point to point communications you are trying to accomplish.

The GRS and family band radios are perfect for this application and don't require a huge investment in hardware!

If 45w is not enought to make contact- just adding power will probably not gain you enough in the area you are in. No cell phone coverage? A 2m/ 70cm amateur repeater on a hilltop in the area is the logical solution. Do the kids need to be licened operators- no, not in an emergency. They would need to be if you all just wanted to find out when lunch is. My suggestion is to take a Tech test and licence yourself, but do some research first an find out if the area is covered by a repeater that can be hit with a handheald radio.

The situation you are describing is exactlly what a repeater overcomes. Extending the coverage area of two stations who cannot normally communicate due to terrain.

What do other people use on your area for local radio communications?
I don't know the shape of the land there. So I'm going to assume you've got some sharp peaks; not rolling hills like the Great Plains. Personally, I would go with whatever setup would be the cheapest to put together. That would probably be the CB's. If cell phones have a big problem working well in your area; then a CB might work a little better. Don't expect a lot better!

it's not like the sun hasn't been shining for the past 5 billion + years.
i know you're talking about solar cycles and sunspots, but honestly, so what?

lol! Exactly! maybe not 5 billion years, more like around 12k, but whats a few thou here or there? But anyway, but the the subject at hand. The piece of crap swr meter i bought didnt work so i havent tuned any the antennas. I know, i know, i should. And that might make up the difference i need. But i dont have the money to keep throwing away if that doesnt work. On the base station, i have it on a piece of 6ft pipe atattched on the atv trailer. I have another piece of 6ft that i could try adding. Putting that antenna 12 to 15 ft in the air, if that doesnt work, adding more power probably wont help. I think the biggest problem is getting over the ridge that the truck is at. There is a place where they have an old fire tower that is another couple hundred feet higher than where we normally park, duno if that would help or not
