When I posted my first post, GONE FOR 30+ YEARS, Many of you posted me It wouldn't be long before I wanted a modern cb. I've never owned a ssb cb until recently. I purchased two Brownings. A mklll n mklV. These are the only ssb cb's I own. I purchased them because the price was soooo right . If I had to use one it would be the mklV as its 40 channels. A separate transmitter n Reciver are a bit redundant, not to mention the space Thay take up. So I searched the internet for a new ssb am 40 channel cb. WOW!!! Not much out there. The galaxy brands look nice. The reviews I read were mixed. I don't need a built-in rogers beep, echo and ten different l.e.d. color choices to match the color shirt I'm wearing or to match my mood. Now I know why those uniden president 25 year old cb's are getting scooped up on eBay as fast as there listed. I've never even liked those 2000 gtl's. A chick I met after a few qsl's in 1987 took me home with her to show me her 2000. I was more interested in seeing her naked, I eventually did but I remembered seeing that 2000. Until yesterday I thought too many meters. To many knobs, (not including hers) just to much goin on. Now Thay seem so much nicer then I remember, Compared to the newest cb's I've seen and reviewed online. I don't own a tram d201a, although I considered getting one to use as a 40 channel + ssb am station. Atleast unlike the Browning it's one piece but after researching them there problematic. Unless you have the exspence and knowledge to know what one built on what day and inspected by what inspector. Hinged cover what color knobs. It's to bad but the 201a's should only be owned by a tech. Otherwise that would be my choice. The bottom line is I want to purchase my first up to date transistorized transciver. I own a 101ee that actually sounds very nice on ssb but I don't want to wait 20 minutes or longer for warm up, then have to retune it every time I want to change frequency. So all your sugestions will be apreceated. Thanks to all WWDX members.

SSB

I WOULD BUY AN Alinco myself 100 watts ssb and 40 am, they work great. I think I saw one down the page for sale here and a great price.
To me no use spending money on a single band radio, but if you insist I would get a RANGER , no drift and great on ssb...

Those Cobra 2000's and 142's are nice talking on SSB.....

But if your looking for a new radio, Id look at a RCI radio, they are solid on SSB usage....Galaxy, word is they drift on SSB, cant say myself, never ran one ....

If your maybe thinking about getting your lics, Id look at a HF radio...

It is interesting to note the ONLY FCC type accepted CB base station is the Galaxy 2457. Things may have changed in the last few years but I doubt it.

It took me a while but I found a 2000 that suited my needs it's got all the Bells an Whistles an re-capped you just have to find some one you can trust when buying it an like me put out some serious $'s for a 30 year old radio .

If you are going to run SSB then forget the crap CB's (or even worse the exports)and go for the Alinco, ICOM, or Yaesu's.

Listen to the voice of intelligence but remember if it wasnt for the crappy ole cb's most of the big bad hams would be playing texas holdem at the womens auxiliary hut cause their crappy cb crapped out and they dont know enough theory to fix it. If it wasn't for Ceeee Beeee they would have never known what A HAM RADIO is.

Why not an optima mk3. They are great ssb radios. Every one I have heard sounded good. And from all the reviews and even some members here run this radio and it seems to get a pretty good report from all that i have read. They don't do 100 watts like a true hf radio, but they do put out about 50 watts on ssb. And they are well built and can be bought for under 300 dollars these days. The alinco sr8t is a great radio too, they run right at 520 dollars and they will do 100 watts on ssb. IMO, both of the radios i have listed have gotten good reports and are both good radios. This is JMO. Any other hf radio is going to cost at least 500 new. The optima mk3 is a 10-12 meter radio and the alinco is an hf radio meaning it will cover more bands. Like I said this is JMO, but those are the 2 radios I would look at that won't break the bank and you still get a good radio. God bless and good luck finding the radio you want

GREAT SUGESTIONS, BUT.

I'm not a purest as I own transmitters that have 11 meters on the band selector. I operated my J.V. valiant for several years back in the day. Ssb was optional with an exciter. Never had the exciter for it so it's never been on ssb. Also used a 101ee for a while. I used it on am. and never had it on ssb. I know the 101ee is basically a ssb transciver but this one has the am filter and had a special am mod which makes it sound very nice on am. I'm not adverse to using "ham equipment" on 11 meters but what I really want is a true 4 watt cb. The choices for a new base are particle zero. By new I mean made this year After researching the galaxy 2547 I'm sure it's not for me.. during my searches I came across the SBE company. From what I understand SBE WAS what became of gonset. My research has brought me to the SBE console V. It's a 40 channel 4watt am 12 watt ssb transciver. I've read terrific reviews on this cb. The fact that sbe stands for sideband engineers to me atleast says ssb equipment was what Thay must have been shooting for. I watched some YouTube clips and downloaded some pictures. I was surprised how well this piece of equipment was made. Most all my knowledge of companies that made cb's comes from who was using what back in bk during the early70' to mid 80's. Until yesterday I've never heard of sbe. I found it odd being that bk ny at that time hade atleast two antennas on every block. I thought I heard of every cb made. Not only heard of but actually heard being used on the air as there were literally 100's of locals back then. Apparently no one was using an SBE. I don't even recall someone even bringing on up during a qsl. Maybe it just flew under the radar. I know it wasn't the price that kept it out of my hood as people were using some of the highest priced cb's on the market. Yet I don't ever recall the sbe name being thrown around. I'm gonna do more research on the console V. This radio is really intriguing me. It looks so well made. It has a hevy duty look and some features I didn't know were offered on cb's of that time period. Has anyone ever owned one or known someone who has? Like I said my interest is highly peaked. Sbe apparently made many models but the console V seems to be there top end cb. I've read the last radio Thay produced around 86 was a console Vl. If the information I'm reading is correct it was the V that was there best. I checked ebay and many sbe's listed. One was a console V unfourtanetly it was not tested or an outright basket case. I will still research some of your sugestions as I learned about purchasing items before doing my research I.e. v4 antenna switch. Thanks
