I recently bought a yaesu vx-3r and I am using in to just scan and rx because I don't have a license yet. But my question is that I know you can listen to analog signals but is there anyway to listen to digital ones? I'm trying to listen to air force base crews but from research it seems it is APCO-25 digital signal.

Thanks in advance and hope to be on the forum more after I get my license.

You won't be able to listen to digital stuff from that radio. You'll need a digital scanner or other digital receiver. Also, some of the public digital stuff that public safety uses is encrypted. You should be able to find out easy enough, though.

what transceivers are on the market that can pick up and decode these signals? or how can you tell? because all I can find really is scanners that all their purpose is to do is listen to these bands. I would like to get a base station transceiver that can decode these digital signals as well as do everything else on the ham bands in the future.

thanks again

I don't know of anything that can do that. You're probably going to have to use a scanner to listen in on those stations.

Digital signals?

Our local police went to 800 mhz digital & the signal is SCRAMBLED as well.I know some people who bought EXPENSIVE digital scanners thinking they could defeat the new system & FAILED! Some sold their scanners & other returned them for a refund.

SIX-SHOOTER:oops:

Same thing here. The RCMP went 800 MHz digital several years ago and most all their comms are encrypted.Scanner sales went thru the floor that year.
