Not a problem, we all started at this point!

Quote:
What is a PLL - I gather it's a chip, but I'd like to understand this better.

Yes A PLL( phase lock loop IC) is a "chip" or "IC", an Integrated circuit device.

Quote:
What is the BCD programming?

BDC is a buzz word the means binary-coded-decimal , some of the "pins" on the PLL chip are turned on or off(pulled high or low) to select the " binary code" that tells the radio, (if you will) what frequency (channel) it is on,the channel selector in the radio, switches the pin`s in a specific order to allow you to have all 40 channels. some chips can be modified to allow you to use "other frequency's" such as changing the radio to work on the 10 meter ham band instead of the CB Band. Some guys have been known to modify the radios to work on the frequency's above or below the standard CB frequency's(please note that it is against FCC reg`s to do this in the US)Etc.
This is not even close to telling you how a PLL circuit works in a radio, I am just trying to get the point across to you. If you want to learn about PLL`s and how they work in CB Radio`s I recommend you read a book by Lou Franklin called "The PLL data Book" it is simple to understand and cover`s the basics. That and read all you can on electronics, radios Etc(reading is a good thing )

Quote:
Why would I want to mod this?

You probably don`t, unless you want to convert the radio to 10 meters( and most of that band uses USB or upper-sideband anyway) but a lot of guys want to know this info.....as you get more involved in this radio-nut's-o-crazy thing you will see what I am talking about for now I would just get one of the radios going, I would concentrate on the Johnson, they have good Audio, if working properly, they tend to work well and sound good Johnson was a very reputable manufacture of radios. Get it set-up with a good antenna and go from there.

Quote:
What is Sams #182?

A Sams # 182, is a SAMs Photofax. It is a service manual that contains schematics, alignment procedures, and such to allow a tech to work on the radio.
I hope some of this helps!
