I have been following this interested forum for a while, and post my first tread
As a licenced amateur operator living in Sweden, I am getting back to to the hobby, after years of no activity, due to newly found interest in APRS.

As my primary hobby is alpine climbing, here in the northern part of the world, I am looking for a HT, capable of APRS and serving as a emergency radio during my trips mainly during wintertime. Communication between other parties is also of interest, as use of echolink with XYL.

The digipeater,- and repeater networks in my area of trips are good (located on relatively high locations). The possibility of mods out of tx would also give me the possibilities to communicate with search and rescue parties in the area in case of emergency. The range of mobile phone networks in the area is none to nothing.

As a fan of Yaesu rigs, I have come down to either VX-8D or 8G. I am attracted by the IPX 7 ratings of the D (lot of snow around here..) and the more professionell mic connection, but like the concept of integrated GPS unit on the G-model. If I decide to go with the D model, I will buy the speaker mic with GPS module, which of cource goes with a higher price than the G model.

Even of this discussion has been, in some sense, brought up earlier, I would kindly hear your current opinions about the models mentioned above.

Best regards from Europe,

It really comes down to whether or not you want the extra features of the VX-8Dr. As you noted, the DR is more rugged and waterproof. If you like the idea of 6m and 220Mhz on an HT, then you need the DR. The GR has a few extra APRS features, though. The DR has much wider RX range, enabling you to listen on HF, AM broadcast, and even AM aircraft band.

Personally, I prefer the DR, even though it has the external GPS. Usually when I want the GPS, I just use the external mic.
