Thanks to all who responded to the poll and all my other questions. I am sure other people may find the info useful as well. I ordered the radio, A Galaxy DX-979 open clarifier,Tune and align, 40 chanel no other mods at this time.Going to use as base and most of my talking is at night with low light so I went with the 979 with the starlight face plate and dimmer control.I like the fact it has variable power and Talk-back also.I will see how I like the radio and possibly buy the frequency counter for it too.I did consider the 959 and 949 But was sold on the 979 being a newer radio with Blue lighting and being able to read the controls without my mini flashlight. Now I am wondering what is the best freq. counter that will plug into the port on the back and what to stay away from.I see alot of counters for in-line with the coax and hear not all of the ones with the conector are plug and play or no mod required.

counter

Get the standard Galaxy FC 347 unit, had one on a 949, straight "Plug 'n Play" & worked great! Reads on both transmit & receive.

I agree with binrat on the freq counter, not needed if you did not get the upper and lower channels installed. the bad part is if you have the channels installed you will have to pay to have it aligned again. should have done it all at once if you wanted to have channels installed. would have saved you mjoney in the long run.

I have other radios and just wanted a 40 channel with upper and lower Side band.I like the set up of the Galaxy and never owned one before. Was going to get it stock but then decided to get the clarifier un locked. I was thinking about a freq counter also because it would be nice to have.I have an older counter but it's thru the coax and olny reads on transmit and Not sure how it does on SSB.

Grogan can either do the freq mod himself; or have the shop he is buying the radio from do it.
No re-alignment or adjustment is needed or necessary.

are you sure on this. I have done about a dozen and a few had to have minor tweaks. some close enough.
about 5 of the 929 so far which is about the same mod. I never say never since this has came back to bite me before .

Well; you are right for saying that - of course. The VCO voltage could be off a bit and because of that some of the freqs might get unlocked.

So you are quite right.

Since he is not going to have a freq counter on the radio and he expressly said that he wants a standard CB; then forget about what I said in my previous post . . .

yes Robb if I was saying that to you I have read enough of your post that I would tell you that since I already know you have enough radio knowledge to do about what you want to do. just some of the guys do not have the equipment or experiance to do most of the alignment and mods. was not rying to step on your toes just do not know what the originator of the post can do. he is having it aligned at the place he bought it. so no telling what they will do.

no disrespect intended to you Robb. you answer a lot of info here and I like what you post.
