Way back when I first joined here, when it was on EzBoard, I had signed up on Ez Board just on a whim while searching various boards and used QRN at the time because IIRC I was listening to static crashes on 75m at the time. It just stuck for the years that followed. I use Captain Kilowatt on other boards and was thinking about using that here as well. One of the announcers I used to work with gave me that name one day when he announced on the air that one of our stations was going off the air for a short while for some emergency maintenance (blown modulator tube). He told the listeners that Captain Kilowatt would have everything back ship-shape in short order. The name stuck. So it's a new name for me but I am still the same old person. No apologies offered for that BTW.

Hmmm - for a few weeks, I was stationed at Jim Creek Naval Radio Station (call sign "NLK") back in the mid-1960s. At that time, shortly after the station was first put on the air, the output was just under 2 MW (that's Mega, not Milli) on a frequency of 24.8 KHz (that's Kilo, not Mega).

From what I understand, NLK is still on the air and active, but QRP now: just 250 KW.

The transmitter is physically in the Cascade foothills near Oso WA, but at that time it was remotely keyed from San Francisco via landline. If the keying circuit got messed up, we generally called SF on the old "AUTOVON" phone system and they'd get it up and running. Sometimes AUTOVON would be down also, but we had an HF transmitter and a CW circuit to SF. That ALWAYS worked!
