before my return to 11 meters I was exclusivly an am operator. Since my return I've discovered ssb. Im currently using my president Washington. I seem to be having a recive/clarifying issue. 70% of the time I have no problem tuning in stations. The other 30% I can't get stations clarified. Everyone sounds like there off frequency. My transmittt is always on. The radios clarifier is unlocked and has been recently aligned. Is this an atmospheric problem or might it be a possible receive problem with my radio?

Th reason to have the clarifier unlocked is so that you can slide around, because not every one is on freq. But some are off and may be out of the range that your clarifier can travel to. Depends on how much slide it has; some clarifier mods will slide +/-1,000hz and some will slide +/-6,000hz.

Agreed Robb, there are a lot of off frequency stations especially on 38lsb lol. If you think you are center slot leave it there and listen for a bit, you will see that are certain guys that sound natural and then you will hear a blend of Donald duck or a slurring drunk. If your clarifier is unlocked and tracks both tx/rx and you are being told by someone you trust that you are on frequency then you should be okay, but yes it's a bit different from AM, it doesn't take much being off frequency to sound wierd per say.

I can't get anyone clarified. Today is a totally different story. Everyone is easily clarified to the point thay sound like an sm station. Yesterday I couldn't clarifier any station at all. Everyone sounded like an off frequency chipmunk .

No electronics guy here but could it be something is not stable that needs to be replaced. A 10 cent part thats just not right.... good luck....

The problem has been rectified. I had the Palomar 300a's power supply on top of the radio. I relocated it. It now sits 4 inches above the radio. Problem solved. The power supply was obviously causing interference. ssb recive on ssb is most excellent. Thanks for responding.

Check the voltage regulator and the crystal filter!!! Given the age of the unit you prob. have some capacitors that are showing their age! Those are the obvious places the to find an untied shoelace.....If the problem is deeper then you need a real tech and some experience all radios have none issues that over time almost always pop up.
