I used to turn a wrench at a Toyota dealership. Had an FJ-60 like that come in on a flatbed. It had thrown a rod through the side of the block. The owner said it had been a great vehicle, "200,000 miles and all I ever did to it was screw the oil filter off, screw a new one on and add a quart of oil every 3,000 miles."

Isn't the AW4 tranny that Jeep uses a Toyota design?

The guy that was driving this looked to be in late 70's. Bet he is original owner. My first ever "brand new" vehicle was an 1978 Land Cruiser. I bought it while stationed in El Paso. Man, take top off, cooler full of beer and cruise thru and around White Sands... Big fun. It was also a chick magnet.

I was expecting to see a 60's or 70's smaller type Land Cruiser. Forget the model number but they often replaced the British Land Rover in alot of places. We used to have a 68 Land Rover and it was a pos on the inside but the outside looked really cool.double skinned tropical roof and safari windows all around. (y)

Most people think Toyota stole everything from jeep. The two are very different, and were both developed on opposite sides of a world war.

The aw4 tranny was designed by Jeep and Borg-Warner. Built by Aisin, a Toyota subsidiary. It's similar to a few of Toyota's automatics.

You're thinking of the FJ-40. It's still one of my all time favorite vehicles.

Even the modern day Land Cruiser is an amazing vehicle. Toyota designs them around the off road capabilities. Before it gets a built in mp3 player, the thing is taken out and abused off road. Creature comforts are a high priority, but only if they don't affect the off road capabilities.

I bought an '86 FJ cruzer new , paid around $11k ,i think,

sold it in 2005 for $15k

Actually I am seriously considering a new FJ-Cruiser as my next vehicle. I like the looks of them and I need something with a heavier towing capacity and a few more horses under the hood than the Escape I have now.At least I have the 3.0 liter V6 but the tent trailer we bought last year weighs in around 2600 pounds empty and with no on board water. Loaded up it weighs as much as my Escape does and I feel it on the steep hills. :censored:

What are they running price wise now? Do the newer ones still have solid axles?

I don't much care how Chrysler has evolved the jeep. Time for someone else to take over.

My prices here are quite different from yours I am sure but they start around $32K and go up. I am considering one in the $38K range. As for the solid axles, do you mean solid bar versus tubing or solid as in positive traction rear end? They have a locking center and locking rear differential that is driver selectable. As for the material making up those axles I have no idea.

The 2013 Land Cruiser has independent front suspension, kind of sad to see that. Not sure about the FJ Cruiser.

Wow! That's what they cost now?

There's a Toyota dealer in Parkersburg, WV that has/had an absolute mint 78 Land Cruiser roped off inside the dealership. Same year and color I had. Can't remember, but it had stupid low miles. Last time I saw it was in 2000.

I'd like to find one in decent shape for a project. I am hooked on the old XJ's now.
