For the last eight years or so I have worked twelve hour shifts consisting of two days, two nights and then four days off. The shifts ran from 8 to 8. One guy in the department hates switching so he chooses to work all nights. He is also very odd and anti-social but that's his thing. A guy senior to me has always worked four days opposite Trevor (the odd one) and only had to work nights when Trevor took vacation so it amounted to about 10 night shifts per YEAR! Finally thru advancements and some leaving the department for maintenance etc. the offer of either 7:30am-4:00pm Monday -Friday or four days of 8:00am-8:00pm was presented to me as there were two openings and I had first choice. Taking the Monday -Friday position meant only weekends off and about $6000 less a year. I figured getting rid of the night shift would be worth the loss of our shift premium for nights as it would total maybe $1000 a year at the very most and I would still have my four day off stretches meaning a "week" off would give me twelve days off but above all my first day off would not be wasted either sleeping or feeling like crap from not sleeping. We were going to change things the first of the year but the company said to go ahead whenever we worked it out how to slide in to the new schedule which is completely opposite my present one. I am at work now working the LAST night shift I will have to to for a long time. I got up this afternoon having worked last night and looked online at the work schedule and saw I was marked in to the new shift starting next week. Ahhhhh......fours days off starting in the morning followed by two days then an eight hour day for first aid refresher course then only one more day off and then back to work in the new shift if fours DAYS. NO NIGHTS! Can ya tell I am looking forward too it? :)

Amen brother!! I hate the night shift myself and can't ever seem to get used to it no matter the pre measures you go through to make sure you can sleep lol! Good deal for you, hard work does pay off in the end!!

I don't really mind the nights as it is quieter and more relaxed if things are operating good. You can actually get by without doing a lot if so inclined. There are at least five on the day crew in my dept. and sometimes six if there is a job on. Only one guy at night to do routine stuff and handle pages. The only thing is as far as maintenance goes there is only one from my dept. on and only one electrician and two millwrights so everyone has to work good together or it can be bad. We don't have the support of several day crew or the guys in the lab to call shots on stock chemicals nor someone that gets paid above my payscale to make the BIG decisions when things hit the fan. Days has more support but more politics and drama too so things even out generally in that regard however there is a definite advantage over NOT having to be sleeping during the day especially in the summer.

I just got home a bit ago and before I left the shift lead-hand told me Trevor is on vacation the first week I start on my new shift. That means I do two days and two nights to cover. Jeeeeesh what a let down. I was thinking I was all done nights for several months until spring at least. Damn Trevor and his left over vacation time!

congrats.
funny though...
I know a guy named Trevor that works midnights. he's using up his back vaca time as we speak. plans to quit when it's gone...

I've worked nights for the last 3 years. I actually prefer it because I work alone. For many years prior, I worked 24/48, but 3 or so years before that I worked 24 on and 24 off. I didn't much like that, but I was single then and made a shit load of money in OT, so I trudged along. I can move to days or evenings anytime I want, but the lab is very busy and I can't wear sweat pants and they'd likely want me to shower and shave more often, lol. I thinks I will stay on midnights. Besides, I have a lady friend that occasionally hangs over from evenings and sits on my knee.
