If done right, in a 949, the NPC mod works great at making it louder and raises the average power substantially. Of course like it's been said, you'll need to make sure afterwards that you're not overmodulating and the waveform looks good instead of clipping. I've always had good experiences with this mod in the 949 and 959 chassis radios.
