Painting an antenna...

I'm thinking "out loud" here, so take it for what it's worth:



Metallic paint on the whip isn't going to matter...after all, it's metal. Metallic paint on the plastic coil cover may not be such a good idea. I think there would be a possibility of it changing the characteristics of the coil since it completely covers the thing. Like possibly create some capacitance beetween the coil and the cover. Dunno, would have to think about it some more...



On the fiberglass antennas, you would want to be careful about the metallic paint because you run the risk of reducing or eliminating the effects of the wound wire...kind've like shorting out all the coils. It could have the effect of just turning it into a 5' straight whip.

Maybe a small yellow flag on the antenna.



I know some guys paint their antennas the same or close to a Submarine Periscope so that it will blend into the woods and such.



But you want it to stand out.

I used to have a memory, but I left it back somewhere in the '70's. Therefore, I spend a lot of time searching for my car in parking lots. I'm getting tired of it.



To help me find my car, I'd like to paint my Wilson 1000 antenna with red, white, and blue stripes; or orange and black, or whatever. Will paint on my antenna cause SWR or TX problems? What should I paint it with? I'm thinking car paint would be best to handle the elements, but my woman has a lot of fingernail polish I could use. What would be the best coating?

A freind of mine put a red-bow on the top coil of his Predator 10K for Christmas....Seen him driving down the freeway the other day, and the antenna looked like it was doing "OK", not bending back or nothing! I was also thinking of putting a reble flag, or Texas flag, on mine. But hell, Suburbans to eye catching now as is...Dont need to draw anymore attention to it!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT="">
