We used that similar set-up at W8PR for the 160/80m vertical array. It worked very well, I thought.
The "Phasing" switch gave us a NE/SW pattern (Euro/S. Pacific)
Position #2 a NW/SE pattern (Alaska-Japan/Caribbean-S. America) and then final switch position an OMNI pattern.
The OMNI pattern worked well for 160/80m CQ's then switch direction to "finalize" reports or add little extra TX punch to direction the bands were running.
I would only receive on the array on occasion, the beverage receive antennas offered a much-improved noise reduction on RX.
I did at times use the array on receive, there were times it would work better that the beverage antennas, but most generally the gain on the vertical array when used receiving would be overshadowed by the noise increase.
