What the heck does all that mean? I am a newbie and I am trying to learn the lingo :). From what I have read "Peak and Tune" is replacing parts - what parts are being replaced? I have also heard of swing kits - what is that?

When I look at the CB mods on the internet I see a list of parts but I dont know what they are?

Thanks

I often wonder myself chad ? no parts need to come out for a tune up , all though audio limiters have been removed since the beginning of time . Most cb radios of today do roughly 5 watt DK to 20 watt pep swing from the audio after a tune up(not all ,but most). There all fairly close. There are modifactions that can be done for more power and swing , this is when parts can be removed or added. Welcome to the forum

Peak and tune are often used interchangably by many CB-ers. Tuning refers to adjustment of the various internal adjustments for best performance. Peaking tends to mean the same thing, but with concentration on transmit performance. "Swing" is referring to the increase in output power seen when you talk into yoour microphone. You should take alot of what you hear about "swing" with many grains of salt, since there is a TON of mis-information all over the Internet, and in alot of printed material as well.

As for swing kits (also called mod or modulation kits), in general they should be avoided. They are generally intended to give your radio a low output when just keying your mic, and a much higher output when speaking. While this looks great on most power meters, careful scrutiny of the signal from an audio and form a technical point of view will show that the signal becomes distorted when you try to go past a certain point.

The parts you see in various modifications could be parts that are intended to be added, or parts to be taken out. In general (with a few exceptions), mods which recommend completely removing a part (or parts) are NOT good mods. One exception is the procedure for converting a CB from a regular final output transistor to what is called an FET (Field Effect Transistor).

As for knowing what those parts are, thats where alot of study, reading, and schooling comes into play. If you're serious about wanting to learn, then start with basic electronics courses at your local technical college, or read and study books on basic electronics.

I personally like them along with all the thousands of others on this planet that use them as well , but I certainly DO NOT live in a perfect cb world let alone the world for that matter. I've heard so many radios over the years with them or even clipped limiters that still sounded OK by my ear hole . As a matter of fact ,I would bet to say a well trained ear (if there is such a thing ?) couldn't even tell the differents if they heard one. Weather a radio has been done that way or not , if a guy doesnt' know how to turn things down , he or she is going to have a problem anyway I look at it. I personally don't know about the rest of you out there in Internet land ? But I don't talk to machines , I talk to people. I realize that you were just asking, wondering as you put it Chad , but you can still still just buy a radio and a good antenna set up and leave it alone as FCC would have it ,because either way, better or worse , it's still against the laws of the land to have them peaked and tweaked . Hell !! if folks left them alone in the first place , it might just be a fairer playing field for all. :D

How did this guy get the boot for this post ?

It's his 1st one and now he's banned :?:
