Police Device Used To Steal Your Cell Phone Data During Traffic Stop - Translogic

"You may have heard about the Cellebrite cell phone extraction device (UFED) in the news lately. It gives law enforcement officials the ability to access all the information on your cell phone within a few short minutes. When it became known that Michigan State Police had been using the tool to access cell phones during traffic stops, it raised concern with the ACLU. Now, everyone is wondering if cops will be using devices like this elsewhere. Will this new law enforcement tool be abused, or will it be used responsibly in the pursuit of justice?
Call us paranoid, but we obtained a law-enforcement-grade software extraction tool for the iPhone to see exactly what data is up for grabs. You'd be surprised to see just how much data today's smartphones can store -- and police can access."

"These tools can be very useful to law enforcement. Say, for example, a homicide was being investigated. Officers would be able to scan cell phone data to obtain the whereabouts of a suspect or victim in hopes of gaining more insight into the investigation. Legally, during traffic stops, officers need a warrant to search your cell phone; however, if you give them your phone voluntarily, they can use these tools to search it. Next time an officer asks you to give up your phone, ask to see a warrant first. Photo credit: dwightsghost, Flickr @ http://flic.kr/p/5hK1oz"

i wonder if it would stop that from working if the battery is out of the phone

Don't see the point of this when the telco can log everything over the network remotely. Unless the contact list was sought but Even unregistered fones are easy to link to an owner by df'ing to residences.

every day more and more technological advances in devises are at the hands of law enforcement agencies , to deprive us of our right to privacy , hence our freedoms are abused for the protection of our homeland security- for which had our federal govt. hadnt had there pants down ! we wouldnt have had the terrorist plots exercised against us in the first place !

so should law enforcement agencys be allowed to use such an item at traffic stops .... no!
in a crime scene investigation ....yes !

there is a fine line between serving justice to an offender of the law
and shear SOCIALISM, which by chance doesn't work .
does anyone remember soviet russia as a socialist state ?
when it died so did the economic collapse that theyve yet to escape
socialism doesnt work! didnt then and it wont now !

???

Implication is that the data grab is wireless, but what I see is the "high tech device" plugged into a cellphone. Is the grab wireless or wired? If it's wireless how do they know which phone in the area are they looking at and why would a device like that need a cellphone to act as a front end receiver.

I wonder what the whole story is...

I feel a little better seeing the device hooked up to the phone directly. Therefore being unlikely to steal the data over the air. On the other hand, everyone should be aware of the fact that all cell phones today are equipped with a built in GPS tracking device that cannot be disabled or turned off when the phone is off. Until recently the only way around this was to remove the battery. Anyone else notice how many new phones do not give you the ability to remove the battery anymore? While I don't do anything to cause me concern over this, I am offended at the fact that none of the cell phone providers disclose the fact they can track your phone everywhere it goes no matter what you do.

I learned of this fact by accident one day when a family member became disorientated and lost on their boat. We had to call the police to file a missing person report. The officer asked me if the person carried a cell phone with them. I replied yes but that it was apparently turned off and going directly to voice mail. I was informed it didn't make any difference if the phone was on or off and to provide the cell phone number. Within a half hour I was contacted by the marine police and informed he had been located safely. Later we confirmed the phone had been off the entire time.

wtf are you talking about?

if anything the erosion of civil liberties is an act of capitalism not socialism, and the soviet union was a communist state, which is very very different to a socialist state.

if you took your head out off the "commie bastard" cloud long enough you might actually see what is happening in the world around you.

oh and by the way, serving justice is a capitalist ideal for making money, absolutely fuck all to do with socialism, which is why every court and police force in the united kingdom is a public limited company with investors to make profit for, i doubt very much your country is any different seeing as your whole constitution is based on british political, economic and military ways.

oh and it might be well to bare in mind if it wasn't for soviet russia, you guys would probably be saying heil hitler and throwing off nazi salutes, thats if the nazi's didn't nuke new york like they had planned, the soviets probably lost more people in stalingrad than every other nation in world war 2 combined,

if you think for a minute the uk/usa and other allied forces would have beaten germany during ww2 without the help of the red army and the severe russian winter, you are seriously fucking deluded.

the way of life you have today you owe to millions of people who gave their lives from many countries around this planet. that you should never forget !!!!

i should have expected that responce from a socialist!

and nazi germany wast the topic at hand , mr KGB!
as for the russians and nazi germany had not hitler gotten greedy" stalin was a allie to hitler in the beginning , until the fist anialation of stalingrad as stated in history. it was after the second attack from nazi germany during the winter that failed germany, and to the six million jews that the nazi's exterminated , holds not a candle to the 45 million jews exterminated by Joseph Stalin in the siberian concentration camps
a socialist state either way doesnt work whether its a national socialist state , or a communist socialist state
and to those that think it does work and will work are just as deluded and fucked in the head as the ones throughout history that have tried that before ! as i was in reference to the socialist view and not the capitalistic income view , as im sure "jazzsinger" would support pres obama in his plight in destroying whats left of the united states !

as a proud american i will invoke one of my constitutional rights freedom of speech " jazzsinger" FUCKYOU!:love:

All I can say is Americans are loosing there rights more and more while it seems the undocumented immigrants and other groups LOL are protected more and more. I think that USA is now a Country of entitlement and it is unsustainable.

you might as well make the most of them before the capitalists take them from you when they start adding to their patriot act.

Mr kgb, pmsl, your so out of touch with reality, maybe you should come out of your cold war bunker every now and again and taste fresh air and reality, before your capitalist government start taxing you for them too.

just in case you hadn't noticed, stalin wasn't hitlers only ally, you could include half the british aristocracy and your own country's arms and oil companies to name but a few.

i'd have thought pres obama would struggle to destroy anything, as i'm pretty certain bush and his capitalist cronies milked the country dry already.

maybe you should try watching jerry springer every so often, you might not be so proud to be american when you see the retarded dumb fucks on that show, but hey, that's capitalism, and those fuckers can vote, pmsl.

Haaaaa

if you don't know your rights you lose your rights.

They can take that thing and stick it where the sun will not shine as a United States Citizen I would invoke My Forth Amendment Right to privacy in fact I invoke all My Rights and never let a Cop ect. ect. push Me around Sure they try but when they see I know My rights and I simply ask “Am I being detained or am I free to go?” they have no choice when I am not breaking any laws.
