potato-powered batteries

When I was much younger I owned a potato powered clock. Damned thing worked just fine.

Had some kids at my school doing that for science fair this past school year. I showed them how connecting cells in series made the voltage increase, and suggested they build several potato cells (they had a plentiful supply of copper and zinc strips). At about 1.2 volts per cell, they had 15 volts at one point. Not a lot of current available, but enough to light up some LEDs (y) .
