While looking through some of the old cb/amp manuals I've collected through out the years I came across a pride dx 300 owners manual. It says when tunning for ssb operation to use a steady tone in ssb mode to tune. I own and use a few different old tube amps and when tunning them for ssb I just load them up on am then switch to ssb. My amp manuals say this is the correct way to tune for ssb on my particular amps. What tone is the pride dx 300 manual referring too and is this the only way to tune a pride dx 300 for ssb use. I don't own a pride dx 300 but I'm thinking about purchesing one. the thought of spending more money on sweep tubes than the amps worth makes me cringe. A single 250b between $100 and $150 seems a much better choice. Thx.

My Pride still has the orginial tube. Don't think I've ever used it on SSB. Tune on AM at 3-4 watts for max power output. Add some Load. Done.

tune with a carrier, talk with the microphone.

somewhere on this site Cappy K has a sticky link for tuning an amplifier, use the search function

There are a few ways to inject a tone, if you want to tune it that way. One way is to use a CW key. Another way is to use something like the Ameritron ATP-102 Tuning Pulser. Some rigs can send a tone directly. The reason for sending a tone vs. using an AM carrier is because the amp tuning can change a little at various power levels. Will it hurt your amp to load it up with just the AM carrier? Not really, but for optimal efficiency and cleanliness, you should tune it at the power level you intend to run it at.

Thanks Molecul. I really appreciate the members who can take a few moments to help a fellow operator understand and learn more . Thanks to you all.
