I am going to get one of the two rci 2950dx or cobra 200gtl dx I will be running barefoot. what one will talk better farther louder on am? mostly I talk on am and just want to try ssb if I like it I'll probubly use that alot also. I know the older 200s had problems but the new ones I read are ok. It seems the 200 just has gobs more power. what do you all think. Looking too order 1 of the 2 tomorrow . And I cannot afford the 2970. Thanks

from what i have seen on the 2950 or the cobra 200
i wouldnt choose either one but if i had to i would go with 2950

I had a very early version of the 2950, might have even been a 2900, I forget, it was when they first hit the market.

It was a great AM radio, the SSB back then had design issues and would warble all over the place, but from what people say, that has been long since fixed. I had mine early 90's or so to give you an idea how long ago it was.

For the money, it's a great radio. You'll want to spend a bit of time with the manual to get used to the controls though.

if you PREFER AM, i doubt either is really a great choice. the cobra's i've seen & used, from the earliest to the last, seem to benefit from using a larger then expected power supply and NO TOUCHING THE GUTS! i have heard very FEW that sound good after being tweaked-especially by joe screwdriver. and that's on SSB. on AM.....no! they are so 'inexpensive' because they are so 'garbage'. the rci....again not in my top ten, but probably the better choice & a fair SSB performer. on AM they can be OK. neither blew me away in the rcv dept, but i think the rci gets the nod there, too. as for exports, i've seen & used 'em all, and would go rci6900 or any of its cousins, including the connex 4800, superstar 158, etc., or even consider an omega force or S9 to the 2 you are searching out. do you need all the freqs available on an export? how about an older uniden grant xl or lt? they can be had, new in the box, for fairly affordable prices, and, on the freqs available/modifiable to, & are far superior to your 2 choices. all the toys available on exports only make the manufacturer & dealer richer. they do nothing for you other then to build your enemy list if you frequently use the toys. if you just 'gotta', go for the 2950.

Between the two mentioned, definitely the RCI. I would personally go with the 2970DX, save up a little longer for it. And have it set up by 8541 Electronics, or DTB Radio, or 292 Radioshop. That's as good as you are going to get in the Export class of radios, IMO.

PS. Check out the Magnum 257, it is an excellent little radio, in many ways quite similar to a 2950 in terms of TX/RX, and microprocessor controlled. Less $$ and more power than the 2950, in a smaller, bluer package.

2950 would be a good pick i had a cobra 200 and everyone around here told i kicked my self in the ass cause i got rid of my galaxy99 so go with the 2950 u won't regret it!!!!

2950DX WOULD FIT THE BILL, OR SAVE SOME MONEY AND GET MAGNUM 257, I just saw a used 2970 converted etc., on hamtrader.com, in fact a lot of 11 mtr radios<converted from 10 mtrs>

Save up a bit more for the 2970
if you have to get it now then the 2950

never used the 2950 but my 2970 worked great on AM and SSB

ofcourse if you really really want to do it right
save up for a Icom IC-718 or a used 706 MKIIG
