Welcome to the forum...I also run a Jeep Wrangler and do some good wheeling!

A basic tune up of a radio shouldn't generate more heat than a stock radio. If the Cobra 29 fits, and you like the features, then go with it. BTW, F.G. BestCommunications (link at top of the forum...tell 'em you heard about it here) sells these, tuned up to do 50 watts, or you can send it in. Uniden also makes some smaller sized radios (520 series) that are pretty good, too. I wouldn't worry too much about the heat problem with a regular CB.

Most of the time, I use a 4' Firestik while off road. With a heavy spring, It doesn't whack too much. I've used a 5' off road, and it just hit tons of stuff. I have mine mounted up as high on the tub as I could get it, though. I also suggest a good noise cancelling mic...the Jeeps are noisy as hell, and nobody likes hearing all the background noise! Do you use an external speaker? I mounted one on the left roll bar right by my ear so I can hear.

And finally NO, you don't need 18' of coax. Just use however long it takes to get from the radio to the antenna. Make sure and send you radio to a reputable shop to get tuned up. Many shops around are hacks.....

And tell all your jeep buddies from other forums about our forum...we're here to help!

The Galaxies can be good radios too, but they are a lot more. You need to ask yourself what you're gonna use it for and determine if it's worth it, because they tend to be a lot more $$$$

For a mic, I like either the Astatic Road Devil, or the Road King 56. Both are noise cancelling.

Greetings!

Another lame question from a Newbie! I'm in the market for a new radio, for my Jeep Wrangler. Space is an issue, my previous radio (Cobra 25 LTD, now fried) was installed in my steel (Tuffy) console. The slot for the radio is 7 1/2" x 2 1/4". A Cobra 29 will barely fit, so will the new small chassis Galaxy. If I get the radio tuned, will it need extra room around the radio for air circulation? Do tweaked radios generate more heat than a stock unit? If so, then I'll probably need a Cobra 25 size radio.

What is a good radio, one that is reliable in a Jeep that sees a lot of rock crawling and forest roads, one that performs well when tuned. I understand from previous posts that a Cobra 25 can be tuned like the Cobra 29, if so, that's probably the way I'll go. I have not ever worked on the inside of a radio myself, so yes...I would need to send it off to get-r-done!

Also, feel free to suggest an antenna too. Previously used a 5' Firestick. Is 18' of coax a must in this application?

Thanks!

The Recent Cobra's are made by Giant Electronics out of China. They are decent quality not quite as good as the Phillipines but alot better then the past few years the ones that Maxon manufactured. Cobra or Uniden you can't go wrong with either.
