Could anyone point me to a link/site/ or explain to me how to trace a repair in a radio using signal tracing and not a scope?
Forgive me newness, but I would like to learn.

1. Do you need two pieces of equiptment, one (signal generator) to put the signal into the radio and one (signal tracer) to "listen" for the signal thruout the circuit?

2. Has anyone constructed these from scratch or kits?

thanks in advance

If you're trying to learn how to use a signal generator and scope to troubleshoot in general, there are many steps to this process. Learning how to operate the test equipment is just one step. Being familiar with the circuitry your are testing so you know how to connect to it and what to look for is another.

On the other hand if you're just trying to fix a problem with a specific radio, give us more information and someone will walk you through that problem.

Yes, I understand, I want to learn how to make a signal generator and or a tracer and how to use it to test circuits. I have seen a couple of old ideas on the net on building them.
If not I would like a recomendation on something to use. I have a couple of 40 channel radios that receive but no mod and since I don't have a scope and don't want to just start swapping out parts I would like to inject a signal into the radio to find the problem. From some of the repair manuals and radio repair help this is the way to go.
Thanks for your reply.

A signal tracer is pretty easy to use if and only if you know where to inject the signal on the circuit board. So the first thing to do is find the schematics for the radio in question and then trace the signal path beginning at the antenna. Now it would help if you had a signal generator and could place a specific frequency into the radio that matches the channel that the radio is set to. Then basically you will take the tracer and go to the first stage before the antenna and see if you can hear the signal generator at that point.

Check this video out and you will see the correct way to use a signal tracer and he made his from an old tube type radio. Arvin 2564 & Homemade Signal Tracer - YouTube
