Is there any outward identifying features, serial number, etc., that tells the difference between ones that are modifiable and the ones that aren't?

Mark,

What mod did you find for the HTX-10? I bought one when they first came out and it was not modifiable. I also had two others when RS was selling them CHEAP when they discontinued the HTX-10 and they were also not modifiable.

My understanding is that RS had the HTX-10 designed so that no mods could be done to change the frequency range of the radio. However, the company that was making them for RS (Maycom?) also made the identical radio for several other retailers and those radios were able to be modded. The Magnum 257 comes to mind as one of those clones that was able to be opened up. On the outside the clone radios are identical to the HTX-10.

That was my understanding as well. The CPU was hard programmed and would not allow frequency expansion. There were a couple mods IIRC that would add LSB and a couple other little things.

Easy to tell them apart. The ones than can be "CB'd' are clearly marked 257, the ones than can't are marked HTX-10.LOL

It is my unserstanding at RS got into serious trouble becasue of the HTX-100 which was easily modded. When they came out with the HTX-10 it had to be locked down.
