Is the range of a Marine VHF and a normal VHF(both are handheld and 5w)the same?

For example HX 270s and Standard VX-350.Thanks

Yves,

They are both "line of site", so given the equal terrain, yes, they have the same range. In simplex VHF, height makes right.

Thanks for the reply;)

But why the handheld marine Vhf is cheaper than land use handheld Vhf?Thanks again!

Because the land versions have to able to be programmable. VHF Marine is predetermined. Also probably because they can charge more for a professional line of radios :)

any radio cb/ssb/vhf, will talk farther on water than land
given the same antenna height.
been there done that

IMHO:whistle:

Above is wrong ..

"any radio cb/ssb/vhf, will talk farther on water than land

That is right..
For radio signal always travels better over water..
Remember how it is far easier to get skip in the rain..
Droplets of water help enhance radio frequency transmissions..

This is why at times...one can be on the beach in calif and while talking only on an HT (4/5 watts) and talk simplex and or a repeater all the way in hawaii while talking on VHF or UHF.
would almost never happen over land ( of similar distances )

The lower the frequency the greater the effect the SALT water has.

That is wrong. Rain has nothing to do with radio propagation, in fact it can attenuate UHF signals. Ever loose a satellite signal in a heavy downpour?

The water itself has nothing to do with it. It is because os the trospheric ducting that opens up between those two points due to a nearly constant temperature inversion that is present. Most contacts are into the repeater on Mona Loa that is very high and sits right in the duct. They call it the "Pineapple Express" tropo duct.
