Ranger 99n2 and another one.

Stay away from the RT-1 final radios, which the N-3 is,,,the internal fans should keep her cool, providing they are working, I use the stand up base that a n2..n3..n4 sits on with a large fan in the bottom, it works excellent as a decent base and cooling fan,,,

The n3s and n4s are going up in smoke I have talked to 3 owners and thay all say thay git to HOT to quick.

Wonder how many of them have had the $50.00 (and possibly more$$) "Peak and Tune"?

My Anytone AT-6666 of course has Mosfet finals but has never had the case opened. If I need more output power, I have it at the flick of a switch!

Undertaker has an x9 that was done up by Chris and has reported well on it. It also has the rt1 but just maybe it's whoever is setting them up that's causing the magic smoke? Only speculation of course

Have to agree quad 6 and 9900 seem fine out of the box.
RT1 radios not so much, I have heard of several already that the bias is too hot out of the box.
And a pre pre driver driving a pre driver RT1 driving, a RT1 driving 2 RT1's

Well if it goes boom-boom, ka-pow!, magic smoke…I’ll whip out some replacements and ride a roll of Kester.

How is the display holding up in your 897?
Mine is showing its age in zebra stripes on the display.
Other than that issue it has been a good portable radio.
It has been on a lot of camping trips.

First, I gotta know what the yellow tablecloth special is and second - yes they are cheap and I've got a pile of them (haha).

The 897... story time if you wanna here it...

Guess you do, so...

This 897 belonged to my (then) brother-in-law whose now my buddy again, ex-bro-in-law. My mentally challenged sister-in-law got super pissed with him and took it out on this radio. It originally belonged to an old HAM who passed away if I remember correctly, so my bud got it at a deal. It wasn't used that much up to this point. So my buddy gets into it and talks, a lot, and Corkette didn't appreciate it none too much.

So one day while she's throwing a fit like someone jumped her in line in kindergarten, she grabs it up and beats it face first into a solid oak dining table. That damn table was pretty strong, didn't even take the first dent... quality home furnishings from Badcock Furniture. The Yaesu however, it looked like Glenn after Lucille got a hold of him (walking dead), OK it was worse than that I think but you get the idea.

How my buddy didn't murder Corkette is beyond me, I told her I'd be caught a charge right then and there and gladly sat my ass in orange for 72. So the 897 goes into a closet and sits for a few months until one day he asks me if I can fix it, in my best Early Cuyler voice I said "hell yeah I can fix that sumbitch". So he brings it to me and it's FUBAR, I mean the circuit board behind the faceplate is cracked in several places, bent shafts on controls, the faceplate is cracked in several places. The display was fine however, quality - not so quality.

SO... I jump every broken trace on that board with tiny wire, very tiny. I plastic-weld the faceplate back together and replace what controls I can, straightened the the shaft of the VFO as best I could (slight wobble still at this point). This was after he tried to get Vertex Standard to fix it - they wouldn't touch it - I guess they were afraid of Corkette?

It worked. He used it for a long time until he ran across a great deal on an Icom 756 Pro 3 (lucky bas----). And then one day it popped into my head and I called him and asked him what he was gonna do with it, he said "sell it to you" and I said "how much for Frankenstein" and he then said "would you give me $100 for it" and again... Early Cuyler "why hell yeah...".

Fast-forward to ebay and I bought a parts radio, replaced the circuit board, the controls, the VFO, everything but the display - looks like brand new now. I rarely use it though so as of the last time I used it the display looked like new, no problems but I'm expecting any day to see it start that same issue. I guess I can thank Corkette for acting like a total mental patient, she helped me score a nice radio for really cheap. I think I might have $250 in it, maybe. I resold the parts radio and recouped most of my cost. And for those wondering, her name isn't really Corkette, it's Brandy, so I guess that explains a lot. If I'd just started this off "one day in the trailer park" then it would all make perfect sense and be totally understandable.
