I bought a used RCI 2950DX, on "AM" this radio screams, but on Sideband the Modulation is very poor and I'm also having a problem with the lights "Flickering" while I'm transmitting on Sideband. I have no idea what was done to the radio before I bought it, but it seems like it is set up well for AM only. Any help would be appreciated and 73. Jim :x

It's fairly normal for the lights to do what you are saying, everyone that I have used has done what you mention.

As far as the modulation, you will probably have to have a good tech look at it and get it tuned up.

make sure you are supplying enough voltage to the radio.
Are you base or mobile?
If base, your power supply should be at least 8 amps and if mobile, you should power it off the battery directly.
Might be starving the radio for power, which can cause a garbled sound on sideband.

As stated, it should sound good on sideband. I have 2 locals running 2950DX's in mobiles and they sound real good on sideband.

CDX8412, when I run mobile I run the radio directly to the battery and when I have it on the desk at home I'm using a 55-Amp power supply @ 13.6 volts so I don't believe that is the issue. Since I bought the radio used, it's hard telling what's been done to it. I think for some "DUMB" reason they may have peaked and tuned the radio for "AM", why they would do that with an ALL-MODE multi-band radio like this I don't know, "DUMB".

You should have at least 13.8 v into the radio, I run all mine on the base @ 13.9 - 14v.
Even at this setting the display will dim or flicker when talking. Of all the 2950dx's & 2970's (this is 12 total) that I have used, they have all been this way.

i the few that ive had ive swaped in a better voltage regulator from parts express, that stops the display from dimming as the factory ones are far to weak and slow. ill be damned if i can rember what i ordered though.

i think it was NTE4093B x2 from parts express. add pair of 2SB688 really makes these radios bark. it adds gain to your modulation before the amc circuit so your always 100%. some low noise zenier diodes NTE583 and some mics transistors NTE107, NTE153 and it will be a screamer that eliminates nearly all the front end hash.
