Please never let me know if you were the one who made this @#$ thing! I really don't want to go to prison. Spent the last 4 - 5 hours trying to get rid of it, no luck. comes up with a screen about the FBI and going to Wal-Mart to pay a fine. Totally locks things up. Been through a couple of 'fixes', must be doing something wrong cuz nothing is fixed. I just love this computer stuff...

Cross your fingers, but I think I got rid of it! At least things are working again, nothing's locked up. The biggest problem was that there was no way to get to any of the window applications to fix things. It also locked the CD drive so you couldn't access anything on a CD.
The 'fix' amounted to making or using a 'rescue' disc to boot the computer from a separate operating system, then getting rid of files specific to the 'virus'. I found it on the company's web site that does the antivirus program I use. (Figure it's the same sort of thing that you posted 'gamegetter', just a different source.)
I also found out that the other computers I have aren't exactly as 'important' (?) or useful to correct things as I thought. 'Qwerks' particular to each machine making it just 'one more thing' to contend with. Oh well.
The next time (ain't that a pig to think about?) it shouldn't be as much trouble. Maybe.

OH MY Doc:eek:
That sucks !!! Glad to see you got it sorted.

When I was in the industry we used to use CD's that would boot into a Win PE environment. The scanners would work from Windows as well, but some things you simply couldn't remove from within Windows, even Safe Mode. We also ran several different scanners as no one scanner (even pay for versions) would fully remove everything.

I'm tempted to run more than one 'scanner'. Unfortunately, that runs into incompatibility problems that I don't want to deal with. (It also slows things down.) The best solution to this sort of problem is illegal...

Yep, disk images +1
Even a simple backup, format, restore.
Gotta hate the people that create those stupid things.
All the antivirus programs let you create bootable cd/DVD to run the scanners on boot to clean those tough ones.

What is illegal??
Multiple scanners ? Bah ! You only need one.

From what I've read, Doc seems more like a gun or knife guy, maybe the occasional RPG, not a strangler, I may be off. :D

The scanners I was referring to were smaller programs put out by the manufacturers of the full programs that would simply scan files and the registry (hence scanner). They had no other capabilities other then finding and removing malware. They typically used the same definition database of the full blown programs. They were much lighter on the system, and you could run multiple of them at the same time, with the only issue really being that they would take longer to run as they were all accessing the hard drive at the same time. Most (but not all) ran from DOS prompts. Do not confuse them with the full blown programs, they were not intended for active protection.

Multiple scanners ? Bah ! You only need one.

So tell me, which one scanner will remove every threat out there. In my experience there are *NONE*. Some are better than others, but none that will detect everything on a computer. If you are earning a living removing malware from computers among other things, you want to make sure you get as much of it as possible.
