Recently worked on one of these for a local operator. Had the Digiscan 400 on it. All I did was clean it up (it was a genuine mess inside!) and gave it a minor alignment. Thought it could use some new caps in it. But other than that, that radio is a real screamer that had serious channels available. What it could have used, is to open the clarifier to slide a bit more. But it got the even channels with that Digi 400, which is ideal for being a real DX monster - IMO.

Even with the stock mic, I thought it was exceptional.

Best receive I ever heard on an 11 meter rig bar none.

At 80$ shipped it is a bargain.

A lot of info on the net for this chassis and they do perform.

Not a lot of watts out but tuned up correctly what you get out is great audio and modulation. I have had a few over the years and if I ever get back into 11 meters again this will be my radio of choice.

that won't be fair on AM either . the 458 will hear through noise better than a new 29 ...... but you already know that

I have 3 Cobra 29s... all with little things done here and there... but no matter what I do to them I still can;t talk on side band...

he also has a 490...
both have the extra channels so i def. wanna see the guts $75 each

and a couple of older Yeasu as well but so far i haven't investigated the coverage or modability
