WELL, after tightening up a couple screws inside the base on the metal contact springs of the talk button, I then noticed intermittent power and modulation when moving the wire at the mic plug.  After opening the plug I noticed a couple wires that were possibly touching when the mic plug wire was moved slightly.    I cut the plug wire and rewired the plug.  Now the mic seems to be working OK.

NOW if I could just find out if I'm getting out OK.  I've got ears when skip is in(but not local because of my height limitation, trees and location in a HOA )  I just can't seem to be  able to get out.  I've got 2  vertical Omni directional antennas :  A Procomm Patriot 12, mounted on a 16' mast against the side of the house, the top is approx 28'; the 2nd is a Twinpoint Saturn 39" low profile base antenna, mounted on a 6'mast, setting up in a tree in the front of the house to a total hgt of approx 26'-28'.  Good/reasonable  SWR on both antennas.  I'm about 5 miles off IH35 north of Austin,  can't seem to even hear the truckers.

I use to love talking skip in my mobile when I was living in South San Antonio near the bases back in the early '70s.
