REPAIR COBRA 142gtl

Well Doc , he's a radio guy in Pen. You could ship it to him or you could find a reputable place around you by asking questions or the yellow pages. When it comes to base stations and weight ,shipping to and from can be exspendsive plus the cost of repair on top of that. At least if theres any place close to you ? you wouldn't have to pay shipping cost unless that doesn't concern you. Good luck to you

I'm trying to fix a 142 myself-the local tech wants $50.00 an hour plus parts!I'm trying to find someone who has a Sams photofacts CB219-it seems this volume is hard to come by.I know I could get it from the sams website but I hate to pay so much for something I would only use once.I already spent $20.00 to replace IC5 which is a typical problem with these radios but mine still refuses to work properly.I am waiting now for a tech book I found on Ebay that covers troubleshooting and repair for these radios but without a signal generator and tracer I would be guessing what the problem is.Sometimes it's cheaper to just buy another radio-I am no technician but have repaired several radios but sideband radios are more complicated. You can find the schematic and parts list on the CB Tricks site-good luck!

Switch kit-My 142 has weak receive and weak transmit.I can only hear very close stations and tx is only about 2 watts.I replaced IC5 because I was told it was a common failure in the 142.Now if it was just tx I would suspect a blown final or if just rx a bad FET1 or front end transistor. There is nothing fried in the radio that I can see so I suspect an open transistor or IC rather than a short.I have checked all the diodes I can get to easily and they seem to be good. All the channels work and it seems to be on frequency because I can talk back and forth using a second good radio.Modulation is great so I know it's not the audio IC-I only have a VOM so my testing ability is limited. If I had a block diagram maybe I could isolate the problem.Do you think a bad pll chip would cause these symptoms?

I forgot to mention it is a very clean, unmodified radio-the tuning coils are still sealed with wax but it appears that the original 1306 driver was replaced with a 2166-I don't think the different driver would cause rx problems?

repair

I really don't know, I am not much of a tech, but what I will do is when I get mine back from repairs <sent it off>, I will let you know what they fixed if they put it down on the slip and let you know give it two weeks because of the holiday ok..
doctor

I doubt that it is an active part thats bad. Its probably a support part, as in resistor or capacitor, either shorted (capacitor) or opened (cap or resistor). If an active part goes, you usually lose the entire signal, with the exception of the first RF amp in the receiver.

As for repair, Doctor, I can handle that here if you don't mind shipping it. Email me for details. My email address is shown in my signature below.

Did you ever get it fixed??, and how much pwr did you get out of it if you peaked/tuned on am and ssb

doctor

I am done trying to fix my 142 GTL.A tech with the proper knowledge and equipment could probably get it going but I am not putting any more money in this radio.I am looking for a new radio-no more used junk!
