North coast of the USA.... Da UP!
A fellow Cber of mine picked a box of goodies from a garage sale last fall and in the mix were two Cobra 148GTLs. He asked me to look at them as he was puzzled as to what was going on with them....
They are in really nice condition and older units, PLL says 39th week of 1983! :thumbup1: I would say they have been used very little and not modified in any way....
First one powers up but there is no audio out and no modulation but it does have a good carrier on AM and hard to tell on SSB, no PA.
Second one would blow fuses when it was turned on, after I tried it on my big supply it would "load" down the the supply. I removed the polarity diode but it did the same. I turned it on and off a few times then it "popped" and it came to life! Now it transmits both on AM and SSB with modulation in fine style but the is no audio on receive, the PA works fine...
I would think from sitting so long the electrolytic caps have shorted something like batteries left in a flashlight too long, full of corrosion...
Does anybody have some idea where or what caps should be replaced? :confused1:

1st one I would suspect the audio IC (TA7222P) is bad.

2nd one I would suspect there isn't any audio from the receiver driving the audio IC (TA7222P). Or maybe a dirty or bad volume control or a shorted lytic cap on a DC feed is bringing down an amp stage prior to the audio IC. The audio IC might be the problem too even though its giving you AM modulation. Put your finger on it to see if its really hot.

Dried up lytics are very common with rigs older than about 20 years.

A scope and about 15 minutes with each radio would locate the problems.
