I've worked it and worked FROM it. Was there in the '60s.

Take a look at Gibraltar with Google Earth. One of the very few cities in the world that has a commercial aircraft runway intersecting the main street! When a flight is coming in or flying out, you have to just sit tight for a few minutes before you can get from one part of town to the other!

I have worked Gibraltar and I have also been there before many years ago. In fact it was while I was still in high school and again a couple years later while passing thru from Europe to North Africa. I first got an SWL report from Ernie, ZB2FK, many years ago and then only a few years ago I actually worked him. (y)

BTW, Pat did you have any encounters with the Rock Apes (actually Barbary Macaques) while there? They are right little thieving @$#$(&%! if you have a backpack! :censored:

It's a real bitch if you run a red light there. Nothing quite like seeing a 747 bearing down on you at a couple hundred miles per hour.

I flew in an out a few times in an C-123 back in early eighties. Airspace issues mandate a funky approach that makes for a queasy ride.

Very beautiful and unique place to visit.

I saw the critters, but from a distance - about 20 yards or so. Operated ZB2HA for about 45 minutes on 15 CW. Stirred up quite a pileup, mostly into central and east Africa.

You're lucky. They can unsnap snaps and unzip zippers quite well. The group I had a run-in with seemed to have an affinity for a bag of Scotch mints and a single sock. They couldn't just steal a pair but had to leave me with an odd single sock as a reminder. :censored:

While navigating the straits underway on an aircraft carrier we would send the young guys (newbies) Out on the flight deck with fruit and brooms.

The fruit was to lure the rock apes to them and the broom was to sweep them overboard.

Of course there never were any rock apes on board but it sure made for some good pictures and many jokes later on.

Once you'd cleared the Strait, you could send them for a bucket of steam, or ten fathoms of chow line...

Once on the Kitty Hawk (Rust In Peace), my Master Chief RM sent me for some UHF oil. Well, I knew the ETs in the shop just aft of Radio Central had a special mix oil for the UHF dummy loads, and the bottles were clearly marked as such. I borrowed an unopened bottle and was back at the Master Chief's desk less than 2 minutes later. He looked at the bottle, looked at me, shook his head ... and my hazing was over! When it came my turn to go mess-cooking, he tore up the orders, saying that no "A" school graduate would go as long as he was the Leading CPO. (y)

Good story, memories(y) had a lot of good times on those old rust buckets.

One of the strangest things was transiting the ditch, we were on the flight deck hitting golf balls over the side keeping our driving skills up to par. The Egyptian armed escort driving along beside us would stop and go get the golf ball and wave it . I wonder if they realized they were actually the target? After a few months underway it really takes a toll on the golf game. Our accuracy really sucked.

Of course that is not as nice a scenery as the girls on the sail boats coming along side the carrier while anchored off of Palma De Mallorca island Spain.(y) they sure did not believe in wearing many clothes, if any at all.
