I purchased a RS scaneer antenna for 2 meters #20-176. It is their $21.00 model. It works fantastic !!! I talked about 50 miles yesterday on simplex with 5 watts ! The gentleman I spoke with said I was very loud and clear and could not believe I was making in to him at that distance. It will not work for 440 though. They have a Discone scanner antenna that is broadbanded for $65 that is supposed to work great for both bands. Just wanted to share the good report on a cheap base antenna. It is set up in my attic.

Yes! Works very good. Cut off the 2 little 7" UHF "verticals" with a dremel moto-tool (or just yank them out with vice-grips;pretty tough) and it will work even better.

"Droop" the radials down at about a 45 degree angle and it will work even better than before.

For UHF work, take the 20-176 and trim off the little 7" verticals as above, leaving the 19" vertical. Then, trim each of the three "ground-plane" radials to ~7". Then you got yourself a 5/8 wave ground plane at 440 MHz. SWR won't be that great, but it will work suprisingly well.

This antenna is a bargain. I have been using it as described in the first paragraph for a long time on 2 meters. I've got mine about 35 feet off the ground and I talk to repeaters 80-90 miles away, most of the time on 10 watts.

Have Fun!
