For receive, it will probably work at least as well or better than a discone at frequencies of 30 MHz or less. Above that the discone will work better.
Keep in mind that the discone is a compromise antenna as well, considering it is so broad-banded. You are always better with a dedicated antenna for each band, but unless you have acreage to put up an antenna farm there will always be compromises nescessary!
