I was checking my swr's today on my antenna and usually it is really flat in the 11 meter band and only up to about 1.5 in the 10 meter 28 mhhz area. It was real windy today and the swr readings were better in the 10 meter band and higher at 27mhhz, up to about 1.6 on channel 19. Later they went back to normal, flat at 27mghz and about 1.5 at 28.3100. Could the wind cause this as the antenna was waving around some but not bad or is my big stick going south. I am at a loss.

Might need to take it apart and clean it. Including the coax connector. Check for rust/corrosion. Wind won't bring down or raise the SWR; but it will change the transmit pattern of the antenna.

I am also thinking my coax is going bad. It has been out in the elements for almost 10 years and is looking kind of weathered.

I find that the signal gets skewed towards the direction the wind is blowing and sometimes I can really get good out when I line the beam up with the direction of the wind. Do you find that as well? :whistle:

When the Imax I run gets bent over to a 50 degree angle in a sustained wind (rare), I don't bother to talk on it. But I've never seen the SWR change because of the wind. Just glad I haven't seen any strong winds with the beam yet. Seems logical that the TX pattern would shift though . . .

oh my frickin god !!!!!!:LOL::LOL::LOL:

oops ..... i dont have one (y)

good one CK (y)

One time I was talking while in a tornado and nobody could hear me but man I could hear my own signal over and over like an endless turbo echo I think that old twister kept bringin that signal back around and around over and over again and really super fast to I couldnt handle it anymore so I turned the radio off and went into the basement where the rest of the family was :eek::blink::unsure::whistle:

That's because the polarity got shifted to circular polarization. :tongue:

OK, now that we have had some fun at Robb's expense I think I know what he was really trying to say and that is that as the vertical Big Stick antenna bends over in the wind it's radiation pattern changes but as he wrote it it sounds like it was pertaining to all antennas. In reality since only a portion of it whips around and the bottom half stays rigid any change in pattern would have to be measured using lab quality equipment and would not be detectable using normal receiving equipment. You can see that on the receive end as signals would be bouncing all over the place in a wind storm and they just don't do that unless you have a loose connection. Maybe that's it. Perhaps Robb has a loose connection somewhere. :whistle:

I cant help Im not a Dr Im a amateur radio operator!! I imagine as I get older my big stick will start bending or giving or maybe when the wind blows it will starighten I just have to wait and see :eek:
