Shorted balun?

Forgive me if this sounds like a silly question...but I'm new to building antennas. I recently picked up a brand new balun, still in the wrapper.

All I did was take it out of the wrapper. I didn't turn any of the hooks as the instructions said not to.

I noticed that when you run a multimeter across the center lead and the threaded ground portion of the SO239, there is continuity....between the center lead and the threads..

Not only that but there's continuity across the two leads you hook the wires to on both sides....as well as the top hook that you use to hang the balun....you can ohm out any of these hooks against each other and you get continuity....you can also ohm out any of these hooks to either side of the SO-239 and you have continuity.

As a result I have been hesitant to hook this up to my radio for I don't want the finals to fry if there's a short circuit. I was going to call the store back and ask them why this was but I either keep forgetting or in the case of tonight, I was forced to work late.

So now my mind is wondering if this brand new balun I have is somehow shorted? Or ????

This sounds like it's a true balun and not just a choke. You're measuring DC resistance which won't tell you much, considering that the balun will be used at RF. All real baluns are transformers. I'd bet what you have is perfectly good.

Beetle is correct. What you are seeing is perfectly normal for a balun. DC continuity and RF impedance are as much alike as apples and crocodiles.

Thanks for the fast responses.

Below are some pics of the balun I purchased. I am going to make a 10 meter dipole with it.

I cut both legs to 99 inches as I plan to run this on 28.300-28.500. One thing I am curious about is if the extra bare soldered wire will cause the wire to be really longer than what it is? Or will it be no big deal?

Also when i put the wires thru the hooks, i soldered the bare ends to the wire itself, in a manner of where they would not come off, but I tried not to let them touch the hooks as I wasn't sure if that would affect anything or not.

Judging by the pics would you say I'm good to go as far as the install? Or should i change anything?

Thanks in advance.

It should work fine. I wouldn't have done things exactly like that, but that doesn't mean much, just a different way of doing it.
