Most people do not understand that the 2nd amendment is not just for personal protection.

This is most commonly erroneously credited to Thomas Jefferson. There is no documentation that TJ ever said that.
Also the furor over personal access to assault weapons is still less than the military you would be going against. The civilian populace would only amount to target practice for the armed forces of the US. Untrained and undisciplined targets.
