SMD

ranger has made a lot of radios that are all SMD. They are generally not accepted well by a lot of shops. I am guessing its because they have a hard time keeping that radio shack soldering GUN from hitting all they traces at once... lol the cobra 200 and 150 are all SMD also.

True but the Cobra's are garbage. But seems like most are still stuck years and year behind heck I thought Uniden would atleast get with the times.

We ever going to see new radios with an all SMD Board? New Technology? Build cost be less too.

The latest from yaecomwood is all surface mount. Take a look at the icom-706mkiig, or ft-857d, etc. How you think they fit 1.8 to 54MHz, and VHF & UHF into one little chassis?

Some parts will never be surface mount because of their weight and size. Such as high power or large inductors or transformers.

Surface mount allow boards to be built by machine. This costs less and the quality is more consistent.

The 2950/2970 DX radios also use it, I had to unlock a clarifier on a 2950DX recently...kind of a pain. I needed an extra small pair of tweezers, extra fine solder, desoldering braid, a 15 watt iron, a magnifying lens, and a steady hand. Wasn't the easiest thing to do.

I want the old technology back, so much easier to work on.
