Greetings: I have recently taken a shore based position and will be required to monitor a local marine vhf channel.

I have a Standard-Horizon vhf hand held Model: HX230S with battery model: CNB230.

Does anyone know if I can plug in the battery charger and use the radio as a scanner or must I drain the battery and recharge as necessary, in other words can I leave the battery charger plugged into the set as a continuous power source?

Many thanks for any help offered.

regards,

M. J. Ferrari

I attached the manual for that radio, which can also be found on Standard Horizon's website. Notice on page 13 that it warns against charging the battery for more than 15 hours with that charger. That means you shouldn't just leave it in the charger to monitor or scan.

However, the manual indicates that the radio will operate on 12 volts. You could either find the optional cigarette lighter adapter, or go to Radio shack and find a power plug that will fit in the radio. Then all you need is a cheap, small 12 volt power supply to power the radio to do what you want.
