My full size dipole for 40 meters is a bit unwieldy in my roof top. It's in an inverted V config(somewhat) but I think the ends are too close to my roof and something seems to be resonating and giving me some trouble. My 20 meter dipole OTOH, has no problems and I'm thinking that it's because the ends are higher from the roof than the ends of the 40 meter dipole.

I was thinking of a shortened dipole. From where I'm hanging the center insulator(about 30 feet high from my roof), it should put the ends at around 10 feet above the roof. Will that possibly make a difference? Thanks in advance.

You can make some load coils, attached to the end of the 20 meter wire to reduce the size of the 40 meter segment. Alpha Delta sells an antenna like this pre-built if you don't want to roll your own - it's the DX-EE.

I bought one of these and it works really well for me. I have the UN/UN matching box right at the eve level of the house(12 feet) and it slopes up to an aluminum mast at 28 feet. It gets out very well. I have made contacts on all bands except six meters. I don't think there is any traffic on six, at least not here.

I don't run any power amps on it either.

Thanks. I'm looking to try an end fed antenna at some point. One that's good for 80 meters will probably be too long. Maybe only something that's around 35 feet or less would fit my area.
The long wire can be cut down to shorter lengths and will work fine. They offer to cut the lengths of the long wire 24, 29, and 36 feet in length. If your radio has an auto-tuner it will work out. Just be sure your station grounds are up to par. Talk to the guy who runs the company and tell him what you want to do and he will not steer you wrong. Very helpful and friendly too.
Get one of these if you are running a power amp. http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-5...0001&campid=5336136228&icep_item=141209547404
I have never used my power amp because this antenna really gets out.

Thanks, would an external tuner work? Also is the station ground absolutely essential?

Does the maker have a selling site besides ebay? I googled and can't seem to find one.

I was looking athe HyEndFed one since that seems to have very good reviews and seems built very sturdily.

Yes the external tuner will work with no problem.
Try Bing and use "Maple leaf studio antennas" for the search term. The station grounds not required for the antenna function. But if you run a power amplifier it will help prevent you from getting "RF burns" from touching the equipment when transmitting. It does help with reducing static noise on receive though.

Thank you. No amp for now. Just barefoot.
