Another late post by me but here goes..... The power regulator transistor and the audio amp is located on the mic side of this rig and others like it. AM and FM use more current and this area will heat up faster with these modes. SSB current does not pass through these devices as much so there is less heat produced. A fan is a great choice for cooling!
