Need tuning point or even swing mods for this radio a SUPERSTAR GRANT. Everything is identical to the President Grant except the radio name.. It is a 4 button model.

SSB power
AM power
Freq. Align.

Etc...

Mahalo, James.

If its the same as the president grant why would you need swing mods? Swing mods are nothing but adding distortion to your audio.

the grant has proper high level AM modulation and dual finals, set it for 100% modulation and it kicks ass.Its also one of the best ssb radios ever made.

Here is a link to the president grant pc999 chassis for alignment:

MODULATION - Adjust VR-14
AM POWER - VR-13
SSB POWER - VR-12

Found it. Looks like the Grant but way different inside.. Everything was marked. Hey Jazz, my Grant has the NPC mod and it sounds really great w/no distortion @ all. Always get great compliments on the Audio using my JC Penny stock Microphone.

Thanx for the info Jazz. Aloha, James....

Your welcome James, but to be honest i suspected the superstar grant was different to the president grant which was uniden made,I believe the superstar grant is a ranger boarded radio, although i may be wrong, its one radio i always fancied along with the ranger rg99 (similar looking to the european president jackson but again ranger rci boarded, which suggests to me ranger have aquired some of the companies uniden used in the production of their radios, something i'd love to know more about as the evolution of export spec ssb radios is something that interests me)(i have asked both uniden in the usa and australia but they either deny anything to do with these radios or just won't comment,if anyone knows feel free to private message me as i find it very interesting and is only for my own personal curiosity and would never be republished),but neither were available in the uk or any of the surrounding european countries that i know of,would be nice if you could post the circuit board number and if possible pics of the inside of the radio.i may be able to shed more light on it for you if i knew which board was in it.

In all honesty James most radio users are tone death when it comes to distortion,i hear people splattering and getting good audio reports all the time, not sure if its the fact they genuinely don't hear it or just them being too polite to tell the guy his audio sucks,I on the other hand if i hear will not only tell you but also try to help you loose it and have genuinely clean audio,as its far less tiresome on the ears and believe it or not will bring you more and longer contacts, many people make excuses to go qrt rather than tell the guy his audio is a strain on them, some don't even know why its tiresome but still disappear.

I don't suppose its much different to the people who screw the volume on a hifi till the speakers are rattling but still think it sounds good,it doesn't.

If you look at your npc mod on a spectrum analyser/scope you'd be shocked just how dirty it is.no wonder when this subject rears its head no-one that does the npc mod is willing to post spectrum analyser/scope pics of it in action.Anything more than 100% modulation is distortion, you just can't escape the laws of physics.

Myself and Bob 85 have had many lengthy discussion on why people just don't hear distortion when we can, maybe its the fact we both have a heavy interest in hifi that we notice it more.

I think your right on the board being a ranger produced. I think it has the same board as the Ranger 3900 or somewhat.

Wish I had a spec. analyzer here to see it. Hopefully I can listen to it and maybe do a videogate of how it sounds w/a stock mic then my 575. I was looking for another gate from WR137 which I used my Pres. Grant on the AM side to see how it sounded but it got removed or deleted.

Anyways here a gate I just did. Recorded it off my cell in the base and talked off the Grant in the mobile. DK is arou1-1.5 watt swinging to 18+ watts. It did sound kinda raspy w/the 575 or scratchy like sound. Is this what you meant by dirty? I noticed it was a little different w/the stock mic much cleaner modulation. When recording this, I plugged it into my pioneer home stereo system w/everything set @ Zero EQ/Bass&Treble.
YouTube - Pres Grant NPC mod test one5.3gp

Im loking to hook up my nandy mixer to my base setup(Cobra 146GTL) to see if I can tailor the sound a bit. But w/o proper equipment, I cant see if Im over doing it, Ill just have to rely on contacts for feedback. Iʻll try to catch 251 in Cali. His upfront on the signals Im producing when were DXing.

For the swing kit(NPC-Diode/Res Mod), I do need in the mobile in my Grant to run my Black Widow 350. It was converted to low input. If I get the DK up too high, it overheats/if I run it w/o the NPC I will have a low DK but not much swing in the process like I have it right now. Dont wanna damage the only box that I have.

Anyways, Thanx for the education my friend. Aloha, james....

Hi James,

Something is telling me it may be a ranger ept3600 variation board in that radio, similar to the one in the ranger rci 3900 hp but with bipolar rf power transistors used in earlier models up to ept360014b rather than the now used mosfet transistors used in the ept360015c boards.I'm certain i recall reading it somewhere, possibly in the galaxy service manual lou franklin did.

if so then alignment for it will be found under ss3900 european chassis easily on the net.

That audio does sound rough but in all fairness listening to it via a cellphone, broadband and my crappy computer speakers it would be unfair to comment further.it wouldn't surprise me if the astatic 575-m6 makes it worse, power mikes push radios to their limits, when you've removed limiters and created asymetric modulation it ain't gonna enhance things either.

a radio swinginging 18w from a 1.5 watt dead key is seriously overmodulated,100% modulation would only swing a 1.5w deadkey to just under 6w peak envelope power, anything above that is distortion.

incidentally the manufacturers spec for the power device in that radio is around 16w pep which is always measured close to saturation,if you see more then you got happy watts despite what people who flog the death out of these mods will tell you or evade telling you.those transistors are nigh on impossible to source,if you can they are very expensive,do you really want to be replacing it?

the biggest proponent of these mods who claims to have thousands of dollars worth of test gear, uses a faulty pdc700 power meter,go figure, because i can't and neither can many others.I just keep getting that AM power feeling.

well I use SSB 99+ percent of the time this new Ranger sure did well on it's first night out. Got here with the normal 12 to 15 watt on SSB, did the 11 meter mod, gave it a tune and got well over 35 watts out of it on Sideband. AM doesn't seem to swing much even after turning the AMC all the way up, did get it to the 25 watt range but with the 2 watt dead key it did just under 20 watts. Recieve is great. For the money it's a great radio but why in Gods green earth didn't they put a freq counter plug out of the back for one of those external counters knowing full well some guys will be freebanding with it. That is the only minus I can come up with
