Ok...I recently asked which is the better radio... A Superstar SS-158EDX or a Galaxy 99V. Well after all the input I am down to the Superstar SS-158EDX or Magnum S6 of choice. I have done much reading and and it seems that these are both strong radios and maybe there is very little difference between the their ability to TX and RX. AM is my primary interest as this will be where I will spend most of my time. Good quality/strong modulation with good ears are key elements to me. (I am using a Wilson antenna) I like the bells and whistles plus the freq, counter. these radios offer. Once I get more feedback I will be placing an order for one or the other. What are the strengths and weaknesses if any of these two radios? So those of you who own or have worked on these radios what is your opinion...I am all ears. Thanks in advance for your input.

If it has to be one of those two, then definitely I would pick the 158. SSB is a very cool mode, it gives you the absolute best chance you have to work world wide skip short of learning morse code.

Like BootyMon; I like Magnum radios. My favorite radio; that's no secret by now.

But I must admit that I have to agree with Highlander. SSB is a very cool mode, and you may find yourself want/needing more radio than AM can supply. You don't have to be a Ham to enjoy DX; having a SSB radio is a good thing. You certainly can talk and listen farther than an AM radio can. For pure AM talking; the Magnum S6 is superior. But for an all-round better radio for the money; then the 158 wins - IMO...

SSB is the way to go ,if given a choice I would pick the rig with SSB, on a quiet day it is common to be able to talk 50+ miles mobil to mobil with under 50 watts, and further mobil to base
When the DX is rolling I have personally worked all over the U.S with under 100 watts of power on ssb out of a mobil...base have worked the world with 100 watts

The best ssb contact I personally had out of a mobil was from south west Arkansas to a fishing boat off of the big island of Hawaii ,report given was 5 by 9 from the boat

The setup I had for that contact was a Grant XL with the extra channel kit,a d104 mobil mic,a 4 foot Wilson Firestick2 antenna and a 75 watt kicker

I'll add this-- The ept-6900 chassis, properly aligned and tuned and with a quality mic, does really well on SSB, both TX and RX.

No, it won't stack up to a good Ham HF radio on RX, but you can sound just as good as those guys, and the RX is plenty sensitive enough with a good antenna system. When the band gets going in a year or two, and there is a little QRM on the band, that's when you'll see what SSB can do. Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, Aussie/Kiwi land---it will all be there for the taking soon. You just need to know where to look and have a good antenna.

On AM, once again, if set up properly, limiter intact and good mic, the 158 should throw out some sweet AM audio.

You all make a very good points. After doing a little bit more reading I should be comparing the S9 to the Superstar SS-158EDX... I guess that would be a fair comparison. With this said how would the two radios compare? Again I appreciate all your responses. I plan on making a purchase within the next few days.
