I have saw alot of explanation about having a low deadkey for driving an amp.
What about when not running an amp.
Should the deadkey be set to close to the max watts that the radio is capable of ?
I have a Connex 3300 ( not HP model) and the max on high is about 11 watts.

IMHO, it should be set to about 1/4 the peak possible power output when 100% modulated...

You can't do your thing if ya ain't got that swing

...But if you just have to use AM, then do it correctly. Any more than 100% modulation is just a waste of time and effort, it's as simple as that. Wanna increase the 'loudness' of how you are heard? Then don't just increase the amount of 'swing', increase both 'dead key' and 'swing', and keep that 100% modulation the same. 'Loudness' equates to how strong a signal is received, which equates to how strong a signal is transmitted, not to that signal's 'quality' or modulation characteristics.
Increasing modulation, or 'swing' to some ridiculous point can certainly change how you sound. To some people, that can mean 'louder', to other people it just means sounding like crap, no fidelity at all. But if that's what you want to sound like, be my guest.
Closest analogy I can think of off hand is the octane rating of gasoline. Going to a higher octane rated gas to use in your car if fine till it gets to a certain level. From that point on, it only harms your engine. You might even see some increase in performance. But the mechanics will LOVE you, and be on a first name basis cuz they see you so often. Your choice...

Depends on the situation and the setup, sometimes swing is not a good thing, but, some people have to have that swing, mostly so they can say they have it, regardless if it beneficial or not... that's experience !

you can have "your" cake and eat it to. People like the numbers game on cb radio . Low Key lots of swing on radio into box means those "not as good as one may think magical numbers" "they" don't have to understand it , they only need to be pleased with it. (which many are)

Does "swing" work ? Yes it does. Is it always perfect ? No it isn't . Does turning things down and using the right mic's where swing and amp are concerned make a differance ? Yes . Once again , Is it perfect ? Nope , Does it work good ? Yes

In many of these "swing" cases. It helps man to know his limitations.

Hit it !
This ain't no disco and it aint no country club either , it's cb radio.
All I want to do is have a little fun before I die.

Seriously though , not all radios are created equal . 4 to 1 at 100% is a good ballpark guess. Depends on the amp Oldtimer ? but many like low DK's and they don't have to swing times10 from there either. If they did , your 100% modualtion is long gone down the road and around the corner all ready , but you do have a mic gain if that should be the case (limitations remember)

It's (more so then not) those magical numbers I spoke about. It's all good in a not so good way. If it works good enough for you ? that's all that really matters. The truth avails many Oldtimer . They just don't care. Can't say I blame them.

You got clean and dirty and I would say in a class c AM cb world , dirty would more then likely win. Still works . I personally hope your having fun Oldtimer. Would we have it any other way ?

Hit it!
This ain't no disco
It ain't no country club either
This is LA!

"All I wanna do is have a little fun before I die,"
Says the man next to me out of nowhere
It's apropos
Of nothing
He says his name's William but I'm sure,
He's Bill or Billy or Mac or Buddy
And he's plain ugly to me
And I wonder if he's ever had a day of fun in his whole
life
We are drinking beer at noon on Tuesday
In a bar that faces a giant car wash
The good people of the world are washing their cars
On their lunch break, hosing and scrubbing
As best they can in skirts in suits

They drive their shiny Datsuns and Buicks
Back to the phone company, the record store too
Well, they're nothing like Billy and me, cause

[Chorus]
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
Until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard

I like a good beer buzz early in the morning
And Billy likes to peel the labels
From his bottles of Bud
He shreds them on the bar
Then he lights every match in an oversized pack
Letting each one burn down to his thick fingers
before blowing and cursing them out
And he's watching the bottles of Bud as they spin on
the floor

And a happy couple enters the bar
Dangerously close to one another
The bartender looks up from his want ads

Chorus

Otherwise the bar is ours,
The day and the night and the car wash too
The matches and the Buds and the clean and dirty
cars
The sun and the moon but

Chorus
