I would spend the money. You're looking at about 15kHz vs. 6kHz. Without it you'll be hearing several stations at once which can be quite a pain. I went without the AM filter in my 920 for about a month and couldn't take it any more. As a good example, I tried listening to the chicken band and was hearing about 4 channels at once. Now when I listen it's just 1 channel. So personally I'd say it's worth it. Heck I even got the CW filter even though I don't do any CW operating. I did get a deal on it from a friend, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it.
