I run a Wilson 1000 roofmount antenna that works great. The match is near perfect with no power and still near perfect with power. (drumroll)... The coil housing on my 1000 cracked! I'm sending it back under warranty. Now I also have a 5000 magmount that I slap on the wifes car for travel. I pulled the 5000 coil off of the mag and attached it to my roofmount thinking it should tune up about the same? Well no it doesn't! Why, I need to know? Without power it tunes to more than a good match. I know all about swr and amps, bla bla bla but electrically shouldn't these antennas be alike? I know the 5000 coil is a bit heavier but I figured it would tune up very close? I'm using the same stinger, radio, amp, coax, meter. I only changed the coil and swapped the stinger.

So is there a bit of logic anyone can explain to me on this one?

hmm.. magnent mount and true grounding mount are two different setups. rais and lower the stinger untill swr is reached to the right spot. those stingers are very touchy i know mine @ 1mm movement up or down changes swr.

did you simply replace the coil from wifes car?if so use her whip too.
from my experience the wilson 1000 seemed to tune longer than the 5000
i actually trimmed 1/4 inch off mine 5000. and the wilson 1000 i didnt cut the whip
i actually raised it about 1/4-1/2 inch. try her whip too
