Which should i trust?I got 1.1 from 26985 to 1.4.5 on 29555.Thats on my astatic but on the radio its no bars on 26985 to 3 bars on 29555....On another forum someone said that 3 bars was equal to 1.8 but my meter says otherwise. This is all from my antron mounted 4 feet from the ground on my deck "temp install till i take it to 35 feet" Gotta say beautiful radio and it was worked on by screwdriver himself.

I would trust the external meter. Many SWR meters in radios simply aren't as accurate as a descent external meter. They give you a good idea and that is about it. That is an opinion based on my experience, and I'm sure some radio manufacturers will argue the ones they use are every bit as accurate as any other meter out there.

got it up 25ft from ground

Its up on my roof attached to my chimney 25 feet from the ground to the base of the antenna.I used a plank of wood to give it distance from the chimney lip and used 600lb certified crank straps and strapped it till it couldnt anymore. As for a ground i didnt use a pole i gotta add 3 more screws to the wood through the antron bolt section got one in now with 14 awg single copper wire running to a ground near my meter box.My swr is flat below and above the 40 hitting 1.3 at 27555 and the built in 2950 meter remains no bars all the way through.Seems like a good setup

It IS better to use an external SWR meter. But if it is showing 1.3:1 on the radio's SWR meter now; then is still should be fairly close. . . .but I would still check it with an external meter the first chance you get before you start using this antenna in earnest. . .

1:1

Its flat below and above the 40 channels till i hit tripple nickel. So its excellent.I also eliminated a issue i was having when i keyed up my damn pc mouse stopped working. Now its fine but my nephew can hear me on his turtle beach xbox headphones lol.No neighbor complaints and i seem to be doing a little better.

Your wire you added as a connection to your ground is not a ground. Once you get above a couple of feet, the connecting wire becomes part of the antenna.

And you can't use wire - you need to be using braid or copper strap. RF flows on the OUTSIDE SURFACE of a conductor and wire has very little surface area compared to flat braid or copper strap.

You would be better cutting that connecting wire to 1/4 wave and making three more like it.

Im not a experienced person when it comes to doing anything with antennas. So your saying that the copper wire i added just became part of the antenna? Will it make performance worse by leaving it?i really hate going up on that roof and i need to borrow a neighbors ladder.I get flat matches something i could never acheive before with this thing in the many places i mounted it.It performs well im in a valley and i have a giant mountain across a lake to the north and hills all around i was talking to a trucker and we ran a little test today he got about 14 miles away before i lost him. This was on am 19 with alot of chatter present.I talk regularly at night with people base to base 10 to 18 miles away. The woman i talk with 18 miles away i have a hard time hearing but she hears me loud.Shes running a antron as well with a galaxy base.on sideband i get out about locally 35 miles 38lsb.I think its good.As far as mounting it i really didnt have alot of options. My neighbors suck and my chimney was near power lines where i mounted it i used a plank of wood sized perfectly from the lip of the chiney down to the roof i then strapped it using 600lb strength pull straps from home depot. The kind u use to strap down stuff on your truck ladders atvs etc.Two of those and next week im gonna put 4 screws through the ubolt holes into the wood plank i have one in now half way wher i have the ground wire run to the electric box ground.I want to put up a gainmaster but seriously doubt i will be able to.Considering i dont have alot of mounting options. My neighbors are always worried about how each others houses look so having 20 feet of mast additional or a mast on the ground up will not favor with them at all i can tell you.I doubt a gain master mounted the way i did this one will stand up.The chimney is 30 years old but its a sturdy colonial outside constructed.

You're the only one who can answer that question.
