Okie Dokie, so here's the deal, I have tax money coming in and I need to buy some equipment, BUT I am not sure where my money should go...

Right now I am focusing on stuff for the shack, not the mobile. Antennas are not something I need, I will build those.

Right now I have the following equipment in the shack:

1.) Yaesu 2900r (also have another one in my car) - 2m FM 75 watts

2.) Kenwood TR-9000 - 2m All mode, 10 watts

3.) HR2510 (on it's way to DOC for a work over and recap, it is like new and has original mic) 10m rig (11 meter capable, but I don't really do CB these days)

4.) 36 amp 90% duty cycle power supply

5.) radio shack mic / beringer mixer / boom and spider mount

-----------------

Goals:

1.) I want to start working HF again...

2.) would like a better 2m all mode setup, maybe more power?

3.) would like to have one radio for all my 2m needs, both SSB and repeaters

4.) would like a tuner

------------

Options I am considering:

1.) NEW - All mode all band unit, in this case the most I am willing to spend is the Yaesu 857d

2.) USED - all mode all band

right now I am looking at the following all mode all band radios used:

a.) Yaesu 897 (non 'd') MARS mod, and TCXO-9, well trusted and well known seller, $675 SHIPPED

b.) Icom IC-706 mkIIg, remote head kit - found a few of them for around $550 to $700 shipped

c.) 857d, found plenty of them ranging from $550 to $750 (even found one with matching autotuner for $850)

3.) USED 450d - Local used, at a local and well respected radio shop $750

4.) older used HF rig (1985-2000+) and an RM Italy kl145 (vhf amp, side band capable, $145) and a used legal limit tuner (MFJ962c seems to sell cheap and I liked the one I owned)

5.) older used HF rig sell the Yaesu 2900r and the Kenwood tr-9000 and buy a used vhf/uhf all mode rig

note: the local radio shop has offered me $75 for the yaesu 2900r and $100 (maybe $125) for the Kenwood tr-9000 for trade in credit

Also what should I do with the HR2510 when it gets back from DOC? Sell it? or run it in the mobile on 10m? If I sell it I will most likely get a Magnum 257/yeticom optima/htx10/ect

I'll make you a deal! Send me all of your tax refund and I promise I'll send you a great HF radio. Howz'at?

Tell ya what, ship that tax return to Doc, and I'll take that pesky 2510 off your hands. Nothing but trouble those radios. One of them dragged me down the dark path of RF addiction. Send it to me, I'll pay half the shipping and send you a fine Cobra 19 in return. That will save you from the hell that is RF addiction.

Just looking our for ya.

stay away from the MKII G,..... it is no longer part supported

consider,.... adding about $100 - $150 to the 857 price ,.. and pick up a used IC 7K.

I would read the reviews on that ic-7000 on Eham before you decide on one. To many possible issues with those rigs.

the early 7k's did have issues with RF getting back into them and causing the PA to go up in smoke.

Icom added "springs" to the boards grounds and it isn't a problem any more.

well I found this from a local ham

quote:

"I have an FT-847 radio for sale with external automatic antenna tuner unit.
Listing it for 900 dollars and it is located in Independence MO.

The 847 is HF plus 6 meters plus 2 meters plus 432 and is all mode for all those
bands. The ATU (FC-20) which works for HF and 6 meters has two antenna outputs so that
you can quickly switch from antenna A to B. The 2 meter and 432 outputs on the
rig are also separate connectors.

100 watts HF
100 watts 6
50 watts 2
25 watts 432

It is a single owner unit and is in great shape. This radio also has the
ability to do duplex so that when you work a satellite you can hear your voice
coming back from the bird."
