Interesting. My first reaction when I saw RF processing was :thumbup1: but then when I saw it connects between the mic and radio I thought WTF?? That's not RF processing but then I read a little further. :laugh: My Kenwood TS-820S has REAL RF processing and it does indeed work far better than the AF processing in my Yaesu FT-857 that is 20 years or more newer.


They say that the more things change the more they stay the same and this another case. Today's new hams don't remember REAL gear that was nuts and bolts as opposed to LCD's and processors like today. Truth be told the big hype today about these new whiz-bang "roofing filters" and the introduction of RF processing is just a case of manufacturers realizing that the older technology is in fact better in some cases. In my early days there was no such thing as a roofing filter. ALL radios had real IF filters in them that worked FAAAR better than any form of DSP audio filtering when it came to strong signal rejection. Today they just prefer to ignore the fact that they are taking a step back in time but two steps forward in better technology and instead make you think this is something new. The same applies to this. All speech processors used to operate at the RF level, usually in a first or second TX IF stage, and worked much better than the audio DSP processors today. Now they are taking another step back in time but two more steps forward in technology that really works. Don`t get me wrong, digital transceivers have their place and functions however there are times when the old ways truly were better. Maybe we will begin to see some more older tech being blended into the newer tech to create a whole new breed of hybrid radios. I hope so.
