Texas star 500v

scored a deal on a brand new texas star 500v converted 270 shipped.
just got it today and it works well. im running it on my ranger 696fd1 the radio does 2w dead key and modulates to 17w. with the amp im seeing a 110w dead key modulating to 450w @ 13.8 vdc. is this what is expected?
amp is hooked up with 4 gauge wire straight to the battery.
if i ran it with a dual final radio 50w,
would i see more output with the amp?

one odd thing is every one in a while when i use the pre amp sometimes it makes makes funny noises....squealing slash buzzing in the receive.

using 24' of rg213. 4' from the radio to amp 20' from amp to antenna.

amp has four 2879s

so your long question short is; would you see more out of your amp if you ran it with a dual final radio ??

well duh... short answer even shorter is YES.

Yea 17 watts is going real easy on it, 50 will wake it up. What meter are you using? It should easily do face value on any readily available pep meter.

one of those new radio shack PEP & AVG meters. i also borrowed a mfj-868 meter to make sure and my meter is accurate the 868.

450 Watts seems "close enough" for me.

I would not try to drive it much harder based on your current results.

Driving it harder would not add any more "noticeable" signal on the RX end.

Just my opinion but I would leave as is, otherwise it could be a $270 paper weight.

These are not true "peak" reading meters, to see true peak requires small powered circuity inside the meter to allow it to read properly.
Examples are the Bird, with a peak reading kit added, or the PalStar Meter that is Active peak reading.
Putting a fan on it is a good idea as well, they will get hot.
I agree with Hammer, for that meter, you are in the ballpark.

today i gave it a shot with the s45hp that does 3wdk and modulates to 90w. on the amp im getting a 100wdk and modulating to 550w ....

im i am going to go back to the ranger cause since it makes the amp do about 450w is more than enough.

i want a 6 pill now.

really to make any kind of difference, you need to go up to 8x2879`s
And it starts getting to be work.
Work some DX instead , and Have fun.

That 4-pill TS500 is more than enough!!! To get any appreciable difference you will have to go to 32-pill job!!! (2000W). Not easy. I have a similar 4 X 2879 amp, and it's more than enough for anyone. They like to see about 50W drive, maximum. Sure, they will take more but it starts to get hard on the amp, you need fans.... You can always turn the power down on the 45HP.
