I had a club member program my HT with the Comm Plan that all our members use. While scrolling through I noticed that one channel that is programmed has a plus (+) and minus (-) offset. The frequency is 147.460, the input frequency is 144.460. How do you manually setup a frequency with a plus and minus offset without using MCP-4A?

Thanks,

I wouldn't use that repeater and advise the owner that it may not be legal by means other than the repeater.

[97.205(a)]. 2) Repeaters may operate on any frequency authorized to the Amateur Radio Service above 29.5 MHz except for 50.0 - 51.0, 144.0 - 144.5, 145.5 - 146.0, 222.0 - 222.15, 431 - 433 and 435 - 438 MHz [97.205(b)]. Note that these frequencies include both the input and output frequencies of all repeaters.

Good Catch

I didnt even notice that this repeater was in violation. Thank you for catching that. This repeater is used for ARES, so I will definitely bring it to the attention of our emergency coordinator at the meeting this Wednesday.

Garrett,

There might be a typo someplace. I have never seen a span that large between input and output frequency. Not saying it's not true, just never has seen it.

In the 2m band depending on the repeater output frequency the shift can be + or -. In the radio each band will have an offset frequency setup for each band. Common is .6MHz for 2m and 5MHz for 70cm. In the 70cm band the shift is always +. That offset frequency can be changed if needed if your local uses something different.

Deep in the manual will be the steps outlined to setup a frequency for repeater operation. The + / - selection could be automatic based on frequency you have keyed if that feature is enable. The offset frequency is deeper in the menus, because you generally don't have to change it.

Hope that helps...

P.S. Check the Kenwood site for the operation manual. Looks like the supplied paper version is light-weight on repeater operation. Down load the CDROM version. First section has all the details you need.

Thanks for the information. The local ARES definitely uses the odd split for this particular repeater. I've never heard any comms, nor have I ever heard (or hit) the repeater when testing all the channels that were programmed. I verified that the frequencies inputted into my radio are correct via the comm plan. Here is a copy http://www.portsmouthares.org/Commplan.pdf the channel in question is Channel 79.

I've downloaded all the manuals for the D72, all is good now as far as radio operation.

Thanks,
